Black Dog set. Right choice for this guitar?
« on: June 08, 2015, 07:32:42 PM »
Hello everyone! My name is Álvaro, I'm about to buy some new pickups to my guitar and I wanted some advice.

The guitar is a PRS SE Custom 24-7, an special edition with ebony fingerboard. Woods are:
-Body: Mahogany with maple top.
-Neck: Maple.
-Fingerboard: Ebony.

The unplugged sounds is, to my ears, not so mid-focused compared to a stratocaster (alder/maple) or to a no-top Les Paul Special (all mahogany, rosewood fingerboard), but more focused and less "ballsy" than a Schecter hellraiser (all-mahogany with thick mahogany top and rosewood fingerboard).

I'm not looking for an specific tone. I need a pickup with enough articulation and tightness to play prog-metal riffs (Cynic, Plini, Hail the sun style riffs, but not looking for their specif tones) and a set that doesn't get mushy when using the B-string with this kind of gain. Beyond the prog metal thing, I'd also like to achieve Joe Bonamassa-like tones with them. As I've heard on sound clips I liked the "complex midrange" kind of tone of the Black Dogs more than the contemporary output pickups.

So... do you think it's a good match with this guitar and the things I'm going to play? Or some one had bad experiences with this combination?

Thank you all for your advice!
