Bareknuckle pickups with growly mids??
« on: July 05, 2015, 05:23:29 PM »
Hi guys , I've been using alnico v nailbomb for most of my guitar I'm kinda in love the growly mids in the alnico nailbomb. I wonder is there any bareknuckle alternatives that  have growly mids and warm bass response

Black Dog I would say is an option as well. I have Ceramic version of Nailbomb and with my setup the mids are strong as well but I wouldn`t call them 'growly'
Dean Cadillac - Emerald (b), Cold Sweat (n),
Mayones Flame CS2000 - Miracle Man (b), Sinner (m), Aftermath (n)
Warmoth Custom Telecaster - Cold Sweat (b) VHII (n)
Warmoth Custom Tele - Miracle Man set

One could add the Stockholm to the discussion too. A P90 that is not entirely unsimilar to the Nailbomb. IIRC our own Agent Orange has both and I think he sais the Stockholm is rawer and less polite. Certainly roaring in a lovely way.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

The Stockholm is less middy than a Nailbomb in the same type of guitar.  I've had both in SGs and found the Nailbomb to be too much (it is fine in my Explorer).  The Stockholm has good strong throaty mids though and is certainly not polite, but I think that kicks in slightly higher in the mid range than the mids do in the A-Bomb.  The Stockholm as as much or more bass and low-mids than the A-Bomb, I know that for sure.  It's in the mid-mids where the A-Bomb has a big EQ hump.

I had the same first thought as other people: the Crawler.  I don't think it will be tight enough in the bottom end for you though if you are used to the A-Bomb. Also the Black Dog is one that comes to mind, but it is not as hot.

Stockholm is the closest in terms of output and aggression out of the other BKPs.  It has a punk edge to it like the A-Bomb, that's why I bought it.

My first thought is Black dog. I've just got a Stockholm and that is pretty strong in the growly mids too, but as it's a single coil is a bit of a different beast to a standard humbucker. Holy Diver is very similarly voiced to the Black dog but imho the higher output makes it a bit smoother and so maybe a touch less growly (still strong in mids though). I had a crawler which I found a bit lacking in character and mids, so I wouldn't suggest that, although that may have been more down to the guitar it was in, so other people's experiences might guide you better on that.
Bridge: (A)Pig, HD, Jugg, PK, (A)NB, Crawler, Aftermath, RY, Abraxas, Emerald, BD, VHII, RR, Cobra, Sinner, Trilogy, Stockholm, Supermassive.
Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.

Well yeah the A-Pig at least has heaps of big throaty mids and a big bottom end.  They like a brighter guitar though.  Perfect in my SG Special.

People might be interested in this video of the Nailbomb set playing more bluesy stuff.  I like that it demonstrates the neck pickup sound a lot

just wondering what bridge option is presented here. My guess is Alnico as I`m trying to compare overall fell to my Ceramic Nailbomb.

By the way, Im quite surprised by neck humbucker here, it`s surprisingly dark-ish sounding without much bite.
Agent Orange, as far as I remember you`re familiar with neck Bomb, how can you compare it to your experience?
Dean Cadillac - Emerald (b), Cold Sweat (n),
Mayones Flame CS2000 - Miracle Man (b), Sinner (m), Aftermath (n)

I think he's got the tone knob wound back some on the neck

Sounds like an A-Bomb in the bridge to me.

TBH I'm more familiar with the bridge than the neck.  I really don't use neck pickups much at all

Another (if late) vote for the crawlers here if you want something warmer / fatter / a bit smoother but with that huge low mids growl.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)
