Pickups for a 7 string
« on: July 09, 2015, 10:15:46 AM »
Hi folks! I just bought an used 7 string, maple-padouk-ovangkol neck thru, honduran mahogany wings, ebony fretboard and spalted maple top. The guitar is quite bright, with a lot of mid-highs, and has the right amount of low-end for my taste, as I like tightness and definition in 7 strings over too bassy sounds, that can easily goes muddy.

It comes loaded with JB-59 combo, and as I expected, it sounds waaaay too sharp, especially in cleans. What would you recommend? I thought on a Warpig set, but I don't know if the guitar would lose definition in the 7 with that amount of growl.
Miracle Man? Juggernauts? C-Bomb?

Got some further pointers as to what kind of music you play and tone you want to have? There are multiple good options so we need to reign it in a bit.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Good point, this guitar will be used to play fusion, prog rock and metal, something like Liquid Tension Experiment/Dream theater, Tool, Devin Townsend, Tesseract, Porcupine Tree... I want tightness and definition, especially in the low strings, and a warm/mellow clean. Now, with the JB/59, I could shave my beard with my cleans and my soloing.
So, as this guitar is more like a singing bird (the pickups are inlaid into two big chunks of maple, padouk and one of ovangkol), I need pickups that "rounds" the high-end. A little bit of more growl would be great, but I don't want to sacrifice definition in order to get it.

juggernaut, I guess
but perhaps you could benefit from a less overly tight pup, like an alnico nailbomb or holy diver

If you want to be on the modern side, yeah, the Juggernaut could be good. Otherwise I´d have a look towards the holy diver (so I basically agree with Eric again). That one is more of the classic Dream Theater tone, but can be taken further. The Alnico nailbomb, again as Eric said, is also an option. The C bomb is commonly recommended for modern DT tones and also tool, porcupine tree, etc. Which of the two would be better here I dare not say as I am not that familiar with them.

Thank you both! It was my understanding that the holy diver was something like the "JB" of BKP, so I never thought about it as a replacement.

I thought about C-Bomb instead of A-Bomb because I think for this guitar would fix better pickups with not much mids, but I will reconsider, I need to know the guitar better

That about the JB is an ongoing discussion, but as far as I am concerned the general consensus is that the HD is somewhat of an improved modern JB. Smoothed out in the high end, more musical, etc. Polished version in a way. The RY meanwhile is often considered similar to the original, the old JB with it´s high mid scream and harmonic richness.

For the general tool / porcupine tree / modern DT area the Cbomb is still probably your best bet. The ceramic smoothes out the high end a tad, yet for a ceramic it still sounds wonderfully organic. You´ll be surprised. A good neck to combo it with for those styles is the Cold Sweat btw. Warm cleans, great shred, and part of the modern standard DT recommendation for a reason.
Though you would also be surprised by the HD, as the tamed high end and general more musical overtones and high end really make a huge difference. One day I will put it in an axe together with the Aftermath neck for a full on Awake era DT machine.
