Neck pickup options
« on: July 21, 2015, 12:40:31 AM »
I'm on the verge of placing an order for a custom Jackson SL2H (alder wings, maple neck through, ebony fretboard) and have decided to go with the c-pig in the bridge. I'm unsure about the neck pickup though. My favorite, judging from the sound samples, are the VHII, followed by the cold sweat. I'm just concerned with how they would go with the c-pig and in the case of the VHII, volume drop. Does anybody have experience with using these pups with the c-pig in the bridge?

Also, any other recommendations are welcome. I'm  looking for a liquid lead tone that cleans up well. Thanks.

I tried an A-Bomb in the bridge of a Soloist and it was awful. There were just too many upper mids and it ended up insanely aggressive. Even my son, who likes tight and aggressive pickups, commented on how bad the guitar sounded. I didn't try the ceramic version so hopefully that works better but I can tell you that the Miracle Man was spectacular in a Soloist. For the neck, the Cold Sweat and Emerald both work very well indeed. Both will shred and both have great tone but the Cold Sweat sounds more modern while the Emerald has a sweeter and more versatile sound.

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

The OP is asking about the C-Pig, not the C-Bomb.  I think the C-Pig would probably be okay, the A-Pig would probably be good too, as would the Miracle Man.

I think the C-Pig/Juggernaut combo would work well here.  Apparently the Juggernaut neck is like a VHII neck with more output.  It also has the same dual screws/bolts config as a Warpig, and would be a visual match

The juggeranut, vhii and cold sweat neck will do a job.  Personally though I think cold sweats work better in mahogony.

I'd go for the juggernaut neck though.

I don;t have any experience with the c-pig but the a-pig is very black sabbath/mastodon in style.  I actually have a warpig/mule combo in my SG and they're well suited.

SGs tend to suffer from a boomy neck pickup relative to the bridge so that would minimize the negative impact of a lower neck pickup output.  Not sure if that is also the case with a Jackson like this

Oh yeah i'll clarify i'm NOT recommending a mule for the said Jackson guitar the OP is buying.

My mistake. That will teach me to post something when it's still so early my eyes haven't started to focus properly!!

I've heard both A-Pig and C-Pig working well in guitars like this.

Thus far the consensus is the Juggernaut. I'm going to have to listen to the sound samples with my headphones. Nobody can vet the VHII in combination with the c-pig? It's just sounds so sweet in the samples!

The Juggernaut neck seems to basically be a hotter wound version of the VHII, that's why I recommended it to you.  Misha Mansoor has said that he asked for a VHII that would be better matched to the hotter bridge in the Jugg set.

It says this in several reviews, like the following from another forum:

You've convinced me to get the juggernaut. I'm sure this thing will sound sweet when it's finished in 2 years. lol
