Knaggs Kenai , Mesa Mark V . Play covers so all sorts of stuff . I like vintage PAF but like them just a tad hotter , not shred /metal hot though

The Black Dog has a lot of growly mids and while it's not strictly a PAF-style pickup, it certainly isn't modern either. It can be used for Metal but can also be used for vintage styles. I always think of it as an angry PAF with attitude. It's certainly a pickup I've always liked and I think this clip shows them off really well:

If you want something that's more obviously a PAF but hotter, you should look at an Abraxas because that's exactly what it is - a hotter PAF

vhII's might work too
they're pretty much like overwound alnico 5 mules with more punch and articulation

The description of the Black Dogs seem to be what I'm after . Want to cut some of the high end

Despite the extra mids the BD has substantial topend. I would look at the Abraxas or even the Crawler, which seems to be hot, but is in fact mediumoutput and just slightly hotter than my VHII. Abraxas and Crawler have enough PAF-pedigree, just some extra mids and less chime, compared to say a Mule.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

The Abraxas is finally getting the traction it's always deserved.  It's such a beautifully aggressive pickup that can do the sweet stuff with authority.

I am going to claim some of that, as i have pushed the Abraxas quite a bit

Black dog is one of my favourite BKP's - my main recording guitar for years was a single-cut with a BD bridge; if I couldn't get the sound I wanted with other newer guitars I could always go straight back to that one and get the sound I wanted. Lots of low mids and bottom end, very growly but still plenty of top end when needed :)
Bridge: (A)Pig, HD, Jugg, PK, (A)NB, Crawler, Aftermath, RY, Abraxas, Emerald, BD, VHII, RR, Cobra, Sinner, Trilogy, Stockholm, Supermassive.
Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.
