Heavy Riffing Tone pups for Epiphone 339 drop D
« on: August 06, 2015, 08:48:58 AM »
A friend of mine is thinking about getting some BKPs for the above guitar. He was thinking about Blackhawks but I'm not convinced putting them in a hollow body guitar would be such a great idea. I think I remember reading on here in the past that low output pups are always better in semi hollow guitars. I'm thinking riff raffs would be a great match for the guitar maybe? I know he likes a lot of drop D style riffing and will be playing it through a Tiny Terror combo.

Where would you think his best options lay?
Gibson LP Trad 2011 w/BKP Old Guard
Gibson CME SG 61 Standard w/T-Types
Gibson SG 61 Standard w/61R/61T (yuk)
Orange 100w Rockerverb 100 mkiii
Laney Studio 3w Superlead
Marshall DSL100HR

Well what tone is he going for and what styles? I'm guessing post-grunge and alt. rock?

I would consider Black Dogs too. Tight in downtuned guitars and good for riffing. Has extra mids, but still vintageflavour, open, dynamic and bright enough.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I think he will be wanting good allrounders that will go from grungy soundgarden to metal riffing too so these suggestions will make a good starting point for stuff to consider.
I suppose as its a semi hollow guitar what would you take into consideration as pups to avoid and for what reason? I ask this out of my own curiosity as well it's all good knowledge.
