Best Height for Rebel Yells?
« on: August 15, 2015, 01:19:03 PM »
Hi all,

Got a set of RYs in my Les Paul, and just wondering what everyone has theirs set at, height wise? I know they're very sensitive to height changes, and I'm curious what the general consensus is about the pup height (my bridge is set to about 2mm, BTW).

Seems to be the closer, the better with the RY.

Just curious as why you are asking, are you happy with the pickup set?

I usually start most any pickup with 1/32" to 3/64" on the high E and 3/32" on the low E and go from there. Going about 1/4 turn of the adjustment screws at a time. Depending on things, I may also tweak the screw poles to balance string volume or match the string radius. All depends. Just play around and see how things develop.

We get asked quite a lot. We always recommend lowering it right down and simply play and rise until you feel you have hit the optimum height for what you perceive the be the best tonally.

I played around with mine for weeks to get them where I wanted. I started with them really high and gradually lowered them. Then I did it the other way round. I didn't measure anything at the time but I've just done it and I have my bridge at about 5mm and the neck around 4mm. They sound better to me backed off a little.

Cheers guys - I'm basically after the hottest response with some sizzle and bite, but obviously without any ill effects!

Just played around a bit more - seems about 3mm for the bridge and 4 for the neck works well for me.
