Flipping The Mule magnet
« on: September 05, 2015, 09:18:06 AM »
Hi everyone, and sorry if this is not the correct section.
I have a modded PRS SC, with PRS 59/09 Treble pup in the bridge and BKP The Mule Neck in the neck; 1 three-way toggle, 1 master vol, 1 master tone, 2 miniswithces: series-coil tap-parallel for the neck; series-coil tap for the bridge.
Before The Mule, I had a DiMarzio PAF 36th in the neck. Everything worked fine, but I wasn't fully satisfied of the neck tone, so I tried The Mule.
Now, in the neck positions everything works fine, and I love the tone; but something doesn't work in the middle positions. I think the two pups could be in counter-pahse. I tried to swap the wires, nothing good. So, I would like to try flipping the magnet inside. It wasn't easy to remove it, because of the wax; but, even if I was able to take the mag from under the coils, it seems to be glued to the screw bar under the screw coil. But if I don't pull the mag off from the screw bar, it would be impossible to flip it correctly. Anyone did it? Any suggestion? Thanx

I think it will just be wax making a very strong seal with the baseplate. All you have to do is push a chopstick/screwdriver under the coils after loosening them a bit and it should slide out with a small application of force.

Where did you get the Mule from? As far as I'm aware there shouldn't be a problem with the middle position on that setup. I have a look into it and let you know what I find.

Also, did you get the PRS pickup with that guitar or was it an after purchase? If it was originally made for a PRS with a 5 way rotary, they most likely flipped the bridge magnet which would by why it is out of phase with the Mule.

Hi! My PRS is a Tremonti SE Limited Edition, it came with an EMG 81-85 set that I didn't love that much. Bridge pup is a 3-conductors PRS 59/09 Treble, AlNiCo V "muscular" PAF tone that I really love. It can be bought aftermarket, but PRS originally made it for USA Custom 24 models with 5-way blade switch. So, yes, they're out of phase.

Maybe I would change the phase of the PRS pickup. That way you can swap it with something later and keep the standard phase in the neck.

Thanx for your sugggestion, but I don't now... the PRS is perfect for me, I don't think I will swap it; and I already made a try with the Mul, so I would prefer going on with the same pup. Don't have time now, but in the WE I will try to separate the mag bar from the screw bar with a screwdriver, as Toe suggested to do. If I won'r be able, I will ask a luthier.

Finally flipped the pup in the correct wat. It was easy to separate the magnet from the screw bar by pushing ligthly the screwdriver. Now every position seems to sound as it should. Very relieved. Once I'll get the time I'll try to record same samples and confront with the old ones.
