Should i have a casino elitist's pickups rewounded?
« on: March 28, 2006, 09:41:11 AM »
Hello. I'm researching a guitar puchase, and was wondering if any of you own a Casino Elitist, and have had Tim rewind the pups. It seems like a no-brainer to me, but some of my friends said that the Casino Elitist already has a good sound. I have not played this guitar, so if someone who has gone through the situation mentioned above, what advice can you offer?

It wouldn't be that much  more to have them rewounded, and by lurking on here, it seems like everyone is very pleased with Tim's work.

Once again, i have not bought the guitar yet, but i know i will within the next 6-18 months.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

The other option is to buy a set of P90s and install them.

If you prefer the bareknuckles then leave them installed, if not then sell them on, and leave the guitar stock.

If you go for a rewind then thats your only option (even if it is the best option :) )

I would buy a separate set, then you've always got the originals.

i'd wait to see what the guitar sounds like, if you're happy with it why change for the sake of change?  bareknuckle pickups are fantastic but it doesn't mean everything else is rubbish (i'll hide for a whle now), i certainly wouldn't be sorting out upgrades for a guitar i'm six months+ away from owning, wait and see my friend, wait and see...

I didn't notice the bit saying that it wasn't already purchased.

So I would go with Blue on the subject, however if you desire an upgrade I would say buy a set and leave the originals somewhere safe.

The problem with the casino is that Tim can't put in BK pup's. He can only rewind them, do some technical difficulties that i don't understand. So if I rewind them, it'll be that way forever. BUT i want that vintage sound, which i don't think the stock gibson p90's can deliver.

Anyone have experience?

Thanks,

Do a search for casino in the forums as I remember somebody getting a set of casino pickups rewound (can't remember if it was an elitist though)

I'd say try it for a while and see if it sounds the way you want before deciding, or search ebay for a discarded set and get those rewound, as although I only own one really good guitar I wouldn't fancy not being able to return it to stock.

The mex strat & wolfgang wouldn't matter at all as they will never have any real resale value (famous last words ?) as stock items (though they are both nice to play).

Look for Tinus' topics. He had his P90's rewound. It will be a huge tonal improvement.

Thats who it was and he loved it, but I still would give the instrument a chance first.

I've personally rewound at least 10 sets of Casino pickups in the past 6 months both Gibson and Epihone, the improvement is dramatic.Coupled with swapping out the magnets for unpolished Alnico IVs and wound to the original spec with 42 AWG plain enamel wire, the tone can't be beaten.

Does anyone have any audio samples of before and after the wound up (of Casino Elitist's PUP's)? To me, it makes sense to get it done, but I encounter opposite opinions from forums and my freinds. If i have an audio file, I can put my mind to ease that I'm making the right decision. Granted, I will be getting the guitar months from now, but I want to know exactly what I'm getting before hand.

Ask tinus, though he seems to be an absolute tone hound and can tell you what way the tone changed.

Plus possibly you can liberate some samples from him so we can hear them ;)
