What would be BKPs most aggressive pickup?
« on: September 15, 2015, 03:56:34 PM »
I'm curious to this as just left my Hard Rock band to form an Electro/Metalcore band, and curious as to what to put in my Floyd equipped Eclipse and Music Man Silouhette. It's mainly straight-to-the-point breakdowns and strummed powerchords for choruses. But with the occasional melody on top. I already have a fewchoices.Just curious about the aggresiveness of different BKPs

Hard  to say.

Someone had a Pig '90 made with a ceramic magnet once, that would be pretty aggressive.

I recon the most agressive pickups are the ceramic Pig90 Agent Orange mentioned and secondly the Painkiller, but I recon the Pig takes the cake as it has the extra P90 edge which really is something. Both are agressive, tight, and crushing. A pig in the Eclipse and a Painkiller for the Silouhette should really do a lot of work each.

I currently have a Ceramic Warpig humbucker in my Horizon. How would the Ceramic P90 version compare? Wouldn't the noise be an issue with a high gain rig?

If you mean the 60 cycle hum the output of the pickup won't effect it that much.  I have a Stockholm P-90 in my SG Junior.

Now that has had noise issues due to the amp I run it into, i.e. the lead channel of a Peavey 6534+

How I tamed it:

1. Made sure the pickup mount is solid.  If the mount is something other than your conventional screwed in P-90 mount or your regular humbucker pickup ring (for humbucker sized) you might run into problems.  Also not a bad idea to put foam under the pickup

2. Shielded the pickup and control cavities thoroughly, with no breaks in the shield and an earth wire from the shield to ground.  You can either use foil or good quality conductive paint.

This way you have done everything you can to avoid microphonics and 60 cycle hum.

A Boss NS-2 before the amp can also help.  I haven't noticed the difference using that recently though.

Don't stand too close to your amp.  If you are forced to stand too close often changing the angle of your body to the amp can help.

The most aggressive sounding BKP would be a dogear mounted ceramic Pig 90 in an SG Junior.

Second most aggressive would be an A-Bomb in an SG

Third would be a tie between Painkiller and a C-Pig in an SG

The A-Pig also sounds very aggressive in an SG.  Here's mine through a teal stripe Peavey Bandit:

SGs just have a very pronounced mid-range focus that makes everything sound really aggressive.  I'm not sure which of your guitars might be in the same ballpark.  If your Eclipse is one of the thinner ones maybe that.

On taming a P90 noise Agent Orange know his stuff once again. Good practice in essence. It is really just about reducing the base noise which you only notice when you do not play a note. The ways describe really help a lot. Depending on your style IŽd go with the order Agent Orange proposes, using a noise reductor last. Imho most setups can theoreticially go without most of the time if all else is done right.

Not tried the c-pig (A-pig yes which isn't as brootz as you'd think) but i'm guessing it's insane.
Painkiller or Black Hawk for me but for different reasons.  Painkiller is more abrasive black hawk sounds huge but very cutting.....like actives but fuller and livelier.
