FINALLY got a new guitar. Pickup suggestions?
« on: September 27, 2015, 05:48:34 PM »
So I finally got a new guitar, a Fender Strat (alder body, maple neck). I have a Duncan JB-Jazz set in there but I'm not loving the JB in there and plan to move it to my Epiphone Les Paul. I really want a tone like Four Year Strong, The Story So Far, Neck Deep, etc. What bridge pickup should I get?

Tone references (I'd pretty much like a good medium of these three):

Most BKP vintage tone humbuckers are made for Les Paul type guitars. For your strat, that leaves the Crawler, Holy Diver and VHII for a strat.

The Crawler might the safest bet on that one
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

Darren is right there. Though I would not count out the Abraxas completely.

If this strat is on the bright side the Crawler bridge definetly is a great choice. Would probably get another neck with it though, either HD or EM, depending on how you want your neck position, bright or smooth.
If it is a bit of a darker strat the HD gains traction. Neck choices are the same though.

BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

The Crawler performs really good in alder/ash-bolt on guitars. The split is happening, quite tele-esque. The sound in the vids is not quite Crawler-esque. In any case the Crawler beefs up alder/ash strats and delivers a full, midbased spectrum with great thick leadtones. If you're afraid the Crawler might be too warm, look at the Abraxas: less output, a bit more chime and good mids yet not as dominant as in the Crawler. Both have PAF-pedigree, so they sound more vintage than modern, but they're capable of producing (some) metalstyles too.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

+1 for the Crawler! Awesome pickup, does not sound like you are after metal tones judging from your tone references so it will definitely sound awesome for tones and music like that! Not familiar with the Crawler neck though, but I understand that you only want to replace the bridge pickup?
BKs: Black Dog (b), Riff Raff (b), HSP90 Nantucket (b).
