How to tell if your gear is "genuine"
« on: October 18, 2015, 05:17:52 PM »
Hi guys,

I have collected a few bits and bobs in my time, but I found a really interesting microphone in my collection and I would really like to verify if it's real or a fake before selling it. It's a Sony mic, is there anywhere I could take it to get it looked over by someone who is qualified? I don't know if there's a Sony official place to go to or if I could take it to anywhere that deals in high-end recording gear?

Trying to sell a bunch of cr@p to buy more cr@p and save for a house deposit, heh. I don't use the mic often enough to warrant keeping it.

I don't know about the Sony mic unfortunately.

For Shure mics there are even websites telling you how you can spot a fake.

Cheers dude, yeah it was a long shot. Basically if it's real, this mic is selling for £750 second hand on Ebay. It's around £1100 new from Studiospares. It has a lot of features, I want to check they all work correctly as I'm not familiar with using this kind of high-end gear, I guess if I took it to a recording studio and had a mess around with a sound tech / producer they'd be able to tell me but I'd likely have to pay for their time which I can't afford to do right now (just made an unexpected gear purchase, lol!)

I'll send off a message to Sony audio support I guess, at least they might know the best avenue to try.
