new humbucker set for black metal type music
« on: October 21, 2015, 03:06:56 PM »
hi everyone,

i'm looking for a new pickup set for my custom build swamp ash tele. right now i'm using a set of bare knuckle black hawks but they sound a little to thin for my taste, escpecially the bass and low-mids come a little short. I play some sort of black metal hardcore hybrid. i linked my band underneath to let you get a little idead of what i'm doing. the album was recorded with another guitar. i hope you can help me out. if you need anything more specific let me know. - timo

Hardly my area of expertise as I couldn't listen to it for more than a few seconds but then I'm an old fart  However, if you want a bigger bass response, a ceramic Warpig would be the obvious answer as that always sounds huge. Another option might be the Miracle Man. It's nothing like as trebly as it looks on the EQ chart as it has a healthy and tight bass response with most of the mids being lower mids, increasing the sense of a significant bottom end. Finally, the Juggernaut might be just the ticket for you too. As I say, it's not really my sort of music but those are the ones I think would be most likely.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

I listened to the recording and what you have said and I tend to think that out of the BKP range the alnico Nailbomb might be your best option.  The other one that I thought of was the Painkiller, but I don't know what the bottom end of that pickup is like
BLACK HAWKS
IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN

I play in an atmospheric black metal-oriented band (there is a healthy amount of post-punk and rock in there, as well), and i used a set of Rebel Yells in a Mahogany neck-through, Sapele-bodied guitar, as well as a Rebel Yell/Cold Sweat set in a Mahogany neck/bodied ESP Eclipse with a maple cap, and they worked perfectly. Great, warm, full sound.  They may not work as well in a bolt-on, swamp ash guitar...it might be worth looking into the Holy Diver or the alnico 5 Nailbomb.

have you looked at the DiMarzio Illuminator or Titan?  or maybe the Mojotone PW Hornet?

I am thinking the alnico Nailbomb but I would ask BKP staff for a recommendation.

The A-Bomb definitely nails 'metal-hardcore hybrid' and should work better in your guitar than something like a Cold Sweat, which is what I would recommend if you had an SG.
