New Juggernauts in my Jackson!
« on: October 22, 2015, 12:13:21 AM »
So stoked my pickups arrived today! Can't wait to get these installed so I thought I'd post it here before and after.

It's a cheap Jackson JS22-7 Dinky 7 string but with these juggs are supposed to be great with the woods this guitar is made out of. (Misha even recommends this combo) Plus the pot upgrades & Locking tuners I am getting (stock Jackson tuners suck) this guitar will sound like its a $1,000 axe.

Excellent, you're going to love this!!

My advice (based on experience):  If you can, take your guitar to a good luthier / guitar tech and get them to do a complete setup.  If the nut is too high, setting it to the right height will make the guitar play much better.  Additionally, leveling any uneven frets will also help.  I think with cheaper guitars, most of the money is saved on the fit and finish so they pass that cost onto the consumer.

In the case of my Juggernaut project, I ended up having the neck angle adjusted in the pocket as well as the nut filed down.  The guitar played WAY better after the work was done and yes, it started sounding like twice the guitar with the nice pickups.

You are changing your pots too, right?  You "CAN" put caps in but I just wired volume knobs directly to the output on the guitar.  Who needs a tone knob on a metal guitar anyway!?

Yes I am changing the pots out. I just dropped it off this morning with a local guitar guy. I bought the 500k Push pull tone pot, 550k volume pot, & the .022 capacitor. I can't wait to get it back. I wanted to do the install myself but I just don't have the hands for sodering. Anyway, I will post an update when I get it back.

So everything is installed. Must say it sounds AMAZING. I have been so inspired to play & write now & I must say I am surprised at how much of a difference there is between the coil tap on & off. Really did widen the tone range more than I expected.

Very nice.

That's the best I've seen that Juggernaut etch look.  You hit on a great colour combination.

Indeed, that took the guitar to a whole nother level look whise. If it sounds half as good you really have a winner there.

The strange thing about this set that I just noticed is that there are no adjustable pole pieces.  Given that the Juggs have the double rows of bolts normally that strikes me as kind of odd, but I guess pole pieces don't make as much difference as overall pickup height

Yeah, I went with the no holes cover purely for the looks which was a bold move honestly but it worked out. It sounds amazing & I have no regrets. Except for the fact that I went through Axe Palace instead of ordering direct. I wanted the etch with no holes as well as the design to be symmetrical so they had to put the bridge cover upside down.

They didn't remove and then resolder the pickup cover, did they?  =-/

I'm glad you love those pickups, they are certainly one of my favourite offerings from BKP and probably the best pickups I have ever tried.

No, axe palace special ordered them and I know for sure because after about 6 weeks I reached out the the Axe Palace about my order & when I didn't get a response the next day or two I contacted BKP. They responded very quickly & knew what my order was so it was done in house. Couldn't be more satisfied with them & that's why I regret not dealing direct with BKP.

I am starting to wonder if this guitar tech who did the work did it right or not. I bought the 550k volume pot and when I go to turn the volume down it cuts out when the knob is a little over halfway around. I feel like there isn't any point in installing the larger pots if you are only going to use it at half of its potential. Is this a legit concern or do I not know what I am talking about?

That does sound very odd.  Does it have a treble bleed?  Maybe that is wired up the wrong way.  Regardless you should be able to go down to at least 2 before it cuts out.
