Any PRS players on here?
« on: October 24, 2015, 08:22:12 PM »
Really tempted to go hunting for an alternative to my main band guitar which is a Gibson Les Paul Studio. The bridge pickup has been swapped out for a ceramic nailbomb and I like how it sounds. Play in drop c tuning through a 6505+ head.

One of the guitar makes I've been looking at is PRS, as a lot of drop tuned bands I know use them such as Alter Bridge Memphis May Fire,  Sikth, etc.

Are there any models I should look at? And what pickups would work well in them?

I guess I want to break out the LP/Strat/Tele mould as I have one of each, but for band stuff a PRS could work well.

i'm new to the PRS game but i'm really enjoying my new girl. its really a great alternative to an LP since mine is mahogany with a maple top. so it gives it a bit of a warmer essence to it that i really love. same thing i loved LPs for. whats your budget like? i mentioned in the other thread that i dont at the moment plan to swap the pickups but if i did i'd consider the juggernauts which were amazing in my LP custom. it also sounded really good with a Cbomb so i imagine that would suit it nicely. lately i've been really enjoying more low output pickups through a cranked amp than the other way around and so if i got any bare knuckles, i'd either try to score another 10th anniversary set somehow or possibly the riff raffs. also dont overlook those humbucker sized p90s. the stockholm is great for those drop tone guitars

hope this helped!

Yeah I like the one you got the other week, the video demos sounded cool! As for budget nothing crazy but something that'll get me a decent standard regular gigging and recording guitar I guess. The LP Studio is also a mahogany, but can be a bit dark and harsh at times to me, so getting something warmer would be great. Something that'll fill out the mid-range frequencies but still sound low end and punchy in a band mix. Also I've experienced tuning issues (esp live) with LP's, some reason they don't hold tuning perfectly, (maybe its due to the cr@ppy tuners or not stretching in strings before shows haha).

Some stock pickups that come with guitars can be great but I've pretty much switched out them out in every single guitar that I've bought.

are you using stock tuners? definitely worth considering an upgrade there. depending on which type yours has, either locking grovers or klusons would be a big help. and yeah definitely stretch those strings.

if your budget was say, a grand. i'd consider something like a used ce22 or ce 24. if your budget is less than that a lot of people really enjoy the SE series. but from the ones i've tried, the pickups were eh. so definitely worth an upgrade. you may also want to consider a carvin. they have great prices for what they offer and the reviews are usually awesome.

I had a USA Custom 22 for several years but for some reason I never really bonded with it so I moved it on.

I tried several different pickups in it and for whatever reason I just couldn't get it to a point where I was as happy with it as my LPs.

Each to their own though I guess

I am yeah, the Gibson Deluxe ones. Usually its one of the lowest three strings that's out, and occasionally the 3rd. Maybe there's something loose in them or I keep knocking it during the set.

A grand is stretchable if I got it on finance, but the SE models are nice I've heard. Would I benefit from a 24 fret neck though? I never do solos in this band and nothing beyond the 12 fret.

They have some with no maple top.

I would go for 22 frets

I have to admit though that the Torero does appeal to me personally.

the only other thing i noticed about the 24 fret guitars is that the neck pickup is closer to the bridge so it will alter the sound slightly for the neck pickup.

the SE range has a TON of different models. definitely worth going through the catalog. maybe consider a chapman guitar too? you may like those. a lot of people compare them to the PRS SEs

I've owned a number of Korean built guitars and a number of PRS SE guitars so I feel well qualified to comment on this one. My other guitar is also a Gibson Les Paul Studio so I have some experience there too. Firstly, let's talk tuners. My Gibson is certainly prone to going out of tune but I've owned three PRS SE guitars and the tuning on them all has been absolutely rock solid. OK, my current PRS uses an OFR bridge but the previous two didn't and they very rarely gave me cause to retune during a gig and if I did, it wasn't by much. The build quality of these SE guitars is also excellent and far better than any other Korean guitar I've tried. My first PRS SE was as a backup to a Japanese Jackson SL3 and any superiority the far more expensive Jackson had was marginal at best. The only weak point on a PRS SE is the pickups, which are poor but easily changed and the SE range is so well priced that changing pickups is hardly a huge issue. In my PRS guitars I've tried Crawler, Emerald, Holydiver and Miracle Man in the bridge and only the Emerald didn't work. In the neck I've tried Crawler, Emerald and Holydiver. I wasn't struck on the neck Crawler but the other two were incredible. At the moment I have pickups from a different manufacturer in there and they also work well so I would imagine most things will be fine. Based on the very low tuning I'd suggest Miracle Man or Juggernaut in the bridge.

Here's a link to the last time I tested a PRS against other makes:

BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

My Gibson is certainly prone to going out of tune but I've owned three PRS SE guitars and the tuning on them all has been absolutely rock solid.

I would attribute this to headstock design rather than tuners.

If you look at a PRS the strings continue straight after the nut.  On a Gibson the strings exit the nut at an angle, which causes binding in the nut that creates tuning issues. Whatever tuners you put on a 3+3 Gibson headstock you are always going to have more tuning issues (especially with the G) than on a PRS headstock.

That is true about the G. I always wondered by the wound D doesn't have quite the same issue. Perhaps there is a bit less friction with the winding

Does the PRS have a different string saddle bridge design? I've also been experiencing string breakages at the saddle (mostly recently last weekend), and I'm not sure whether to put that down to faulty saddles or just my too aggressive style of playing!

Some PRS guitars have a wraptail bridge.

I haven't read any bad reports about them.  I guess if you have any troubles with it you could replace it with the following bridge, which I have on my SG Junior.

Guess it'd be a cheaper way to fix this, but I'm curious to know what it'd do to the tone cos I like how my guitar is currently sounding.

I have PRS Bernie Marsden. Nice guitar, well made, put a set of Mules in it way better than the stock ones which are ok I might add. Use this as a second guitar to my Les Paul Standard(Bareknuckle 10th Anniversaries).
