Problem with BOSS SD1 pedal - Battery Vs Mains Power
« on: March 29, 2006, 12:15:47 PM »
Hey guys.

I've been digging out alot of my old gear lately, and came across an old Made In Japan BOSS SD1 Super Overdrive that I bought years ago, but haven't used in a while.

I powered it up with a 9V mains adaptor that I had handy, and noticed that the on/off LED was quite dim when the pedal was switched on. I then tried the pedal with a 9V battery and the LED was alot brighter when the pedal was switched on.

I also tried the SD1 with a brand new Diago Powerstation Pedalboard Power Supply and the LED was still dim.

Does anyone know what the problem may be, and how I could get it repaired?

Craig

Thanx for the schematic Jimi :)

Apparently, these older Japanese BOSS pedals were made to run on a 9v battery or a 12v mains power supply. Something to do with a diode/resistor that's fitted before the power jack as a safety against using a power supply with the wrong polarity.

If this is the case, am I still safe to use a 9v adaptor with it?

I'm not certain on this, but weren't some of the older boss pedals AC rather than the newer DC?
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away...

I'm not sure to be honest.

The SD1 works fine on a 9v battery and, on the suggestion of someone on another forum, I tried it with a 12v adaptor and the pedal worked fine.

That's where i got the info from about there being a diode/resistor wired before the power jack to safeguard against incorrect polarity :)

I tried the SD1 with a 12v PSU and it worked fine :)
