Well, the new price of a Mini Rectifier was too steep for me. I wanted to try a 6505MH, but couldn't locate one in a shop.

Since I have some Mesa Boogie cabinets already and I liked the Mini Rectifier in a shop test I did, I decided to get one secondhand.

I was a slightly worried about this because Eric Hellstyle, who gives good advice here, felt there could be some reliability question marks.

However, in the shop I tried the mini rec, the guys reckoned their mini rec had no problems in three years of ownership.

My particular mini rec is four years old, has been gigged, and still has all the original valves.

The previous owner had customised the amp with some official Mesa blue LEDs, which I think look alot better than the standard red ones.

Of course, the amp sounded a bit different with my guitars and cabs as it had in the shop. I can't turn it up as much at home - even though I felt I tried home levels in the shop, this turned out not to be the case(!)

The first annoyance was there was only 4 and 8ohm outputs from the head, so I can only run it with one of my cabs for now. I will make up a lead to parallel run my cabs as 4 ohms.

The clean and pushed settings sound absolutely great for jazz and blues. Even with pickups that don't normally sound good clean its all very sparkly and hifi.

The vintage setting is a little bit touchy with the guitar thats supplied to it. The mids can sound a little boxy/weird. Nevertheless, with a number of particular guitars it sounded great at high gain and very usable. In particular I liked my Aftermath loaded Hamer. The EQ controls are much more sensitive than my Marshalls and greater control can be achieved.

The modern setting sounds alot louder than the vintage setting. This was also the case in the shop though. The treble and attack were very very pronounced at home levels. Too much really, even turning treble and presence all the way down. I did notice theres some treble bleed through at very low levels from some gain stage which probably isn't helping.

Since the modern mode sounded amazing in my shop test, my feeling is that I need to turn up the wick abit. So I have ordered a cheap attenuator, from Jet City, and will report further when this arrives. I hope this will allow that modern mode to be usable.

The low end I can hear is alot tighter and tracks much faster than my Marshalls. Also the cleans are better and there is a load more gain. Having an effects loop and channel switching seems really futuristic to me :)

I must say the amp gives me a completely different palette of sounds to my Marshall. I am extremely happy with the clean and pushed modes. The vintage mode isn't bad either and is very easy to play - get harmonics, tapping, fast shredding etc all need less work. But it will all be for nothing if the modern mode can't be made to sound like it did in the shop test.

Fingers crossed.

Nice score, I had one for a while but I could get better tones at low volume out of my roadster (plus I missed the 4 channels) so I sold up and bought another roadster... so much for the whole low wattage

But I agree they are fantastic amps don't quite have the girth of a full on Dual Rec but damn close!

hey, brother!
I think I didn't mention the volume drop problems most likely have something to do with the tension oscillations from the outlets and also with the 10w mode or something, but I'm talking 110-127v
maybe they won't manifest this sort of issue in 220-240v

there were some minor issues with intermittent noise in some cases, though

The Jet City attenuator is what it is really. It's fairly nicely put together in fact, with good quality components. But yeah, it noticeably sucks tone. However, on the plus side my Mini Rec and Marshall 50w are usable at low volume levels. So overall it's a net win.

The modern mode on the mini rec is giving me that tight and aggressive contemporary tone which I was after.

There's no way the mini rec can be called an amp suitable for a bedroom. It needs that attenuator. For sure it doesn't have that big power tube kick to it. But it is quite a lot lighter and smaller than a full sized head. So again for me - net win.

Overall, I am happy with my new aquisition, but a little disappointed maybe. I don't feel like I'm getting the best from the amp with the attenuator. Would a 6505MH be any better? Hard to say really. Certainly it would be cheaper, but the quality of the Mesa is not under any question from me.

I do have that tone I was chasing. Particularly with my Aftermath loaded Hamer it sounds very aggressive and crushing.

The amp is loads tighter than my Marshalls, even with the Marshalls being used with pedals.

The future will see what the rig holds, but I'm moderately happy right now.

Although I'm a totally clueless idiot when it comes to amps, all manufacturers have to do to make me want one is build them small... they're so cute, like puppies!  The Mini Rec looks great, and I must say I'm very tempted by the Express 5:25.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

God yeah! I must admit I am pretty clueless as well, hence the amp buying blog on this forum ;) I know what I want, but not necessarily how to get it.

I've seen a 5:25 in the flesh when I tested the Mini Rec and it looks adorable.

One of the shops on Denmark Street is now a Schecter and Mesa Boogie dealer and has basically the whole range.

All amp builders have a failure rate but in my mind, any reports of a high rate of failure among mesas are dubious at best.  My old Recto was built in '93 and just got a clean bill of health from the tech.  Definitely keep an eye on those EL84s though.  The tubes are the one volatile part of the circuit.

I'm glad you're digging it.  Mesas are odd amps in the way tones are dialed in, but they have some great tones in them.  They're not the be all and end all, but they're great sounding little units!

Dual Rectifier sounds a lot bigger because of the large bottles but you lose the EL84 crunch.  Both are great amps and the Mini is infinitely portable.
