Warpig bridge/ HD neck?
« on: December 22, 2015, 03:48:40 PM »
Hi guys,

I have a pre-lawsuit PRS Singlecut which is awesome ..... but I absolutely hate the lifeless pickups in it. I have a bridge Warpig and a neck Holy Diver in my spares box atm which I know would sound good but wondered what you lot think?

I also have a bridge HD but in double-cream which would look shitee in this guitar (hence the other post asking about adding covers). I may install an HD pair but quite like the idea of the Warpig bridge.  I play everything from Gary Moore to classic rock to prog to nu-metal through an EVH 5150 III 50w/ Bogner XTC Classic/ Rack preamp.

I LOVE the sound of the main riff of the Saxon song 'Battering Ram'

Cheers,
Jim

the alnico pig isn't much hotter than the holy diver
it's just grainier, bassier and more even voiced, but not a whole different thing
should work just fine

Should work fine I recon. Interesting pairing actually. The neck will be brighter than the bridge though, that is for sure. Which is something I like though.

If you already have them around I see no reason not to try it. For what you want this could work brilliantly even, depending on how they sit with this guitar.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I tend to think that the neck will not sound brighter than the bridge in practice.  Neck pickups by virtue of their placement sound very different from bridge pickups.  The Holy Diver is a brighter neck pickup, but it is still a neck pickup.  I haven't heard one sound brighter than a bridge pickup yet.

By the way I saw a band play the other day with the rhythm player using the neck pickup the whole time.  Sounded awful on its own but thankfully the lead player was playing on the bridge pickup the whole time and that added some edge to the rhythm.  As the guitar was borrowed I'm not entirely sure that she realized that was the case but she seemed happy with the sound at soundcheck.  I knew another punk guitarist who seemed to love a woofy rhythm sound.  Played on the neck pickup and added a fuzz pedal and a c--ked wah.  To my mind it sounded horrible but if he was compounding those three things he must have liked it.  Worst guitar sound I've ever heard!  It was one of those bolt-on neck Epiphone SGs with stock pickups
