Frequencies?
« on: December 27, 2015, 06:19:35 PM »
I'm trying to set up the EQ on my Nova System and I'm getting really confused about what I should use. The Nova System allows me to select frequencies between 41Hz and 20KHz yet some research on the internet suggests that on a 24 fret guitar in standard tuning, the frequencies range from 82Hz on the open low E string to 1319Hz on the high E string at the 24th fret. Why on earth can I adjust all the way up to 20KHz if the highest frequency I hit on my guitar without bending strings is only 1319Hz? I assume 1000Hz is 1KHz  I've also found advice online that suggests various different settings I could use. One said 60Hz (bass), 400Hz (mids) and 13KHz (treble) while another suggested 80Hz (bass), 900Hz (mids) and 3500Hz (treble). I'm very confused!!!

I imagine the higher frequencies are for whammy/ pitch shifted signals.

Anything below 100hz on guitar is pretty much wasted.  I don't know much really I just play around until I find something that looks good.

Take a look at the MKIIC+ frequencies for a good starting point maybe? They're very powerful on the GEQ on the amp

80hz, 240hz, 750hz, 2200hz, 6600hz

The higher band 6600hz is great for taking all the fizz out of a tone so just have a tinker.

That's when the range is explained in terms of fundamentals. Don't forget about all the harmonics! If you have any recording software and some decent EQ plugs with a real-time graph, see for yourself what the signal looks like for each note and chord. I like using the FabFilter stuff for this. You'll see the lowest note, the fundamental, and all of the humps thereafter being harmonics.

My first attempt at setting the EQ didn't go well (can't remember the frequencies I used) but my second attempt is much better. For reference, my amp is an Orange TH30 which has plenty bottom end already and I'm tuned to D standard. At the moment I have these settings:

Frequency 1 = 200Hz, 0 boost, Band Width of 1.2
Frequency 2 = 750Hz, 3 boost, Band Width of 1.6
Frequency 3 = 2.51KHz, 1 boost, Band Width of 1.2

Does that sound like it might be in the right ballpark? It's certainly an improvement on what it was.

Bit of a write up on the TH30's tonal output. Might be of some help seeing as that's your reference point.
