Author Topic: does anybody else love buying bunky gear? (Read 6286 times)

I've always had GAS but always for the top end expensive gear, you know USA strats, Gibbo LP's and PRS's.

Recently I picked up a bunky guitar for $50 dollars. I bought to teach myself guitar maintenance and refinnishing.

The unfortunate thing is I know really like it and arent going to destroy it finding out how to fix my own mistakes!!!

This has set me off and now scour everyone I know and all the local papers for the bunky gear I can get my hands on.

Anybody else do the same?

Underdogs do have something about them. I bought a cheap BC Rich Mockingbird Firebreather. I got it dirt cheap. I wanted it as a project. It now has a replica Jackson neck and a Warpig. It only needs a proper nut.

I often get GAS for some cheopo dog of a guitar.

What about it's owner ;)

I tend to go for pedals for a cheap fix, though that may change now that I have a proper guitar (meaning built in the country usually associated with the name on the headstock, and non budget range).

'Bunky' is kinda like 'junky'. If something's bunk, then it usually doesn't work, but it can also mean shoddy, etc.

Its gear like this

Basically any old gear that most other people turn their noses up at.

I'm thinkin maybe by the responses that there arent many people who get into a lot of retro stuff.

I like messing with cr@ppy stuff. In fact, my favorite fuzz box is a Boss FZ-2 that most gearheads would turn their nose up at. There's alot of good stuff that looks like sh*t to be found out there. A friend of mine has a little 5w projector amp that was converted into a guitar amp.....sounds pretty good in a retro kinda way.

a mate of mine has done the same to an old valve radio. This thing is like a 2 meter long wooden cabinet with a lift up top to expose the AM radio inside.

Its over drives real easy and sounds absolutely great. (in certain situations)

Heres some of my latest finds

The little one is a Japanese made "Chaser". Its about half size to a normal LP. The supprising thing is for basically what is a kids toy it plays really well. For adult hands its really only good for power chords and barre chords. I'm hangin to put a sets of Riff Raffs in it. Cost me $50.

The Normal one is a Korean made guitar ($150) and now owes me around $1200. It has a SD invader bridge pickup and a Fishman power bridge instead of the standard tun-o-matic typeand a spurzel locking tuners (fitted backwards for something different).

Anyway if anybody has anything like these I'd like to see them... the uglier the better :lol:

Well, I've got a "bunky" guitar from e-bay that I'll do something to at some point. Thing is I'm not sure what I'll do to it. I don't get on with it well in fact, I may have to bite the bullet and sell it on, but I'll see what happens in the mean time.

When the three soapbar sunn mustang beast is finished, full pics will be posted.At the minute tho, it looks like Lurgan...

Just a quick query though...Routing out "Headtheball"right through the headstock would be a bit too much maybe?? I planned to do that then fill the insides of the letters with resin. Perhaps just carving it would be enough.
