NGD, I've finally gone to the dark side!
« on: January 13, 2016, 12:40:16 PM »
I have never really been interested in PRS guitars.  The original Modern Eagle looked nice, and some others have been very pretty, but there just always seemed to be something missing in them for me.  Then in 2008 they released the Johnny Hiland model, which seemed to tick a lot of the boxes of my ideal guitar.  However, I never looked much into it and there wasn't anywhere near me that would be likely to have one.  I believe the model was discontinued in 2011, and that would seem to be that.

Then a guitar appeared in a friend's shop.  It appealed to me, so I went and had a look, and I found it to be annoyingly good!  So I took it home and, for the time being at least, it's my new friend

Thanks to the maple bolt on neck, it seems to have a snappier attack and a bit more zing than other PRS I've tried.  Oddly, and intentionally, the coil split only acts on the neck pickup, and is split when the tone pot is down.  You pull it up to get the full humbucker.  This isn't a problem, as the split sound suits the guitar very well, although the humbucker does sound pretty good too.
I've never used a PRS trem before, and I wish now I had!  Not really sure how they've managed it, but it's a great system, much nicer than the original Fender, and more subtle than a Floyd Rose, but easier to use than a Bigsby.

It's a great guitar.  Which is annoying.  I don't want to start lusting after PRS guitars!!!

And the world continues to push me towards buying a PRS too. I want one so badly already!

So congrats. Lovely looking guitar as most of them are. The contrast of boody to fretboard especially looks cool here.

Does look lovely. I've played a few in my time and they are fine instruments and deserving of the high repute.

Love it, although I think a rosewood boards looks better on a PRS.

And now I've had a bit of a problem with it!! someone lifted it and propped it up against a box a couple of feet away from a radiator.  I saw it, but thought it was well away from it and would be fine.  but suddenly the frets on the treble side of the neck have sharp ends, they're sticking out slightly from the side of the neck!! I think it has slightly more bow in the neck too.  I've put it back in it's case, where I should have had it, and well away from any heat source.  does anyone know if the wood will return to where it was, or will I need to take it to a luthier for sorting out?

Needless to say, this was a little upsetting

Congrats! The Hilands are excellent guitars.

It's basically a mahogany bodied CE 24 with a maple fretboard and Hilands electronics. They have a sound of their own and I would love to try one!

I hope your fret issues gets resolved

It's obviously dried out the wood a lot.  I would try to reintroduce moisture into the fretboard.  Get the stuff that you clean MAPLE fretboards with and rub that into the neck.  Do it a couple of times a day for a while and see if it improves things.  If it doesn't work the most that happens is that you have a shiny clean fretboard.

Thanks Agent Orange, I might try that.  it has improved a bit, but  not back to where it was.  After reading up about it my panic has happily subsided :)  it's neither an uncommon nor disastrous issue.  Hopefully it'll keep settling back, and that remoisturising idea might help, but any remaining sprout can be tidied up by a luthier with some files.  Luckily I know an extremely good one of those
