Capacitors for P90s?
« on: February 24, 2016, 10:09:18 AM »
Before I end up swapping out my SGs bridge pickup again I just want to make sure I'm using the right caps with it! To be honest I can't even remember what I got when I rewired the guitar other than orange drops. I'm fairly sure I got whatever was recommended for humbuckers at the time.

Tone wise the neck MQ sounds spot on so I may just leave that. The Pig 90 tapped bridge is just a bit bright and harsh for me - I have the tone rolled down a bit and it's still a bit much when the amp gets louder. So any suggestions to tame this a bit before I go on the lookout for another pickup? I don't really want to as it's almost perfect!

Change the caps.

You could try 0.033uf or 0.047uf caps in the bridge position if you are currently using 0.022uf.

Try '50s wiring.  That should enable more control with the volume knob. Backing off the volume knob on a '50s wired A-Pig will have a considerable impact.

I'll get a couple to experiment with then. Are the expensive caps worth the extra cash over the normal orange drop type? I'm guessing not in this instance? Other than having tighter tolerances I can't imagine them making a huge impact on tone?

My guitars are already wired 50s style, much prefer it to the normal way, actually makes the controls usable.

Imho if you stick with orange drops you should be in the good area for most applications. Anything above could be better, but at harsh diminishing returns. For most people orange drops are probaby the best they need. What you get for your money is in great balance there imho.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Cool I'll give the orange drops a go and see what happens. Looks like they're both .022uF so I'll try a higher rating on the bridge. The MQ neck sounds perfect, it's so good in the SG!

I have a 0.033uf Russian PETP K73 poly cap on my Stockholm bridge.  You can them cheap on ebay
