Mississippi Queen
« on: March 06, 2016, 11:20:02 PM »
I fancied an MQ for a while and managed to get one from a local site. My plan is to put it into my PRS SE Bernie Marsden. At the moment I have a set of Mules in it. I will leave the Mule in the neck position . The MQ will go in the bridge position. I'm thinking bite from the MQ and creaminess of the neck Mule sounds like a good pairing. Any thoughts on this .
Thanx
Keith.

Should work great, good combination,, the bare knuckle pickkup rings work better than stock se prs, which are a little 'looser' around the pup.

Well, I canīt really comment tbh, as I only use it the other way round, HB bridge and P90 neck. However, with this balance of a PAF HB neck and a classic P90 bridge I can imagine it to work as well.

Basically what I am trying to say is I think this could work nicely and I beg you to report back on the results. =)

I found the mules to be very height sensitive, and the MQs can be very loud so maybe get neck where you want it, and then adjust the bridge height for volume matching, if you want them matched that is

Bernie now loaded with Mississippi Queen. Left the Mule in the neck. Wasn't sure how this pairing would work.....bloody hell the MQ is massive in this guitar pac90 on here said it was a loud pickup, the Mule I find does go well with it. Plenty of Grit and growl from the MQ and nice and smooth and creamy on the Mule neck. Glad I tried it. I usually run my amp clean( Orange Dual Terror) and use an Carl Martin DC overdrive but I put this through the amp without pedals and I turned up the gain, it sounds fantastic both ways but of the two ways I tried it I found I liked it just straight into the amp. Sorry got no way of posting clips, well, my phone would just not do this pickup any justice. Cheers to those who replied, I have one MOFO of a guitar here now!

Looking good mate. Glad to hear that you feel the P90 love. Beastly pickups that usually go underapprechiated and are not looked at much. Though lately we have been able to convince more people to get to try em out.

Cheers Kiichi, might send the Mule off to BK to put a brushed nickel cover on that too.

I've never thought of doing it this way around myself but I don't know why because your logic seems perfectly reasonable to me. Kiichi has been trying to get me to buy a P90 for ages but something else has kept coming up. That 'something' this time has been a Strat and the required upgrade in pickups (sorry Kiichi but I eventually abandoned the idea of BKP singles and went DiMarzio instead) and I'm really appreciating the quality of the singlecoil tone, especially in the neck position. I feel that this is a good indication that I'll really like a neck P90 so I'm selling some stuff I have lying around the house and I promise Kiichi now that my next purchase will be a MQ for the neck of my Les Paul as I think it will go well with the 498T in the bridge.

I get you (at least a lot), you know that. Not hating on other makers or anything. Open secret that. And actually I can see your choice being a good one, seeing the tones you are used to. A BKP SC will be more different than DM, which is fuller and more compressed. So I can absolutely see a sense in your choice.

Mainly doing this answer to make sure that you know that I saw this. And that I will try to hold you to it. Man do I look forward to hearing your MQ thoughts. Seriously. Value your opinion a ton as you lay it down so well. Even if you hate it Iīd love to read why. But I am rather sure that wonīt happen. ;)

I had this pair in my SG for a bit and they go together nicely. I changed out the 498t for an Irongear Rolling Mill bridge and they don't work so nicely together, the middle position isn't nearly as good and the neck MQ is much higher output! I may try the Black Dog in the bridge again but right now I can't be bothered faffing with pickup changes, feels like all I've done lately!

The Bernie looks fab this way. The Mule-neck is fantastic. My favorite.

You need to go higher than Black Dog. At least Abraxas, if you want it to have a fighting chance with the MQ.
Black Dog (b), Abraxas (b), The Mule (n), Mississippi Queen (n), Trilogy Suite (m)

Had: Riff Raff 7 (b), Painkiller 8 (b)
