The Boss vs Piledriver
« on: March 13, 2016, 11:19:16 AM »
Hello guys! I got myself a very nice Fender Telecaster Telebration 62 Custom a few weeks ago, that I love to bits and is my axe of choice these days. The guitar is great in every way, and I would probably not exchange the pickups if I was not returning a pickup I recently bought and did not have any use for. The original pickups are a set of Fender 62 Custom pickups with alnico II magnets. The sound is great and very versatile, I love how I can go from country twang to balls to the wall heavy rock and even metal! However, they are a little bit soft in the bass and also a bit loose in the low end response. It could also use a tad more bass. The pickups are bright, but that does not concern me as the tone knob is very effective. The guitar has steel saddles so I doubt I would miss brightness regardless of my pickup choice. It has an alder body and rosewood fingerboard also. Here is my slight dilemma however: I am really curious about the Piledriver, but I am afraid it would be too much. I have other guitars for heavier styles as well. My main concern is its versatility, which is really important to me. Versatility and tight bottom end, but I know the Piledriver is tight. The Boss, on the other hand, I understand is really versatile, and wound with the same wire as two of my other favourite BKPs (Riff Raff and Nantucket). But is it tight? I play most rock and heavier styles, but in my head the Telecaster is equally a country guitar as much as it is a rock n roll guitar. And even though I am not a "country boy" I enjoy fiddling around with some Alan Jackson stuff when I grab the tele. So having a Telecaster that cannot do country is totally out of the question really. Thanks a lot for your answers in advance!
BKs: Black Dog (b), Riff Raff (b), HSP90 Nantucket (b).

The Boss seems imo more versatile. Did you consider the Blackguard 50 too?

I did not consider the Blackguard 50 no, should I? Judging from the description the Boss is more voiced for rock than the BG 50, but can still do country, which is exactly what I am looking for really. But if I could get both P90 and Telecaster in one pickup (Piledriver) that would be equally nice!

Thanks a lot! Sounds good. I checked out some reviews of the Boss, and I understand it is not very twangy... A Telecaster without twang is like pizza without cheese imo, so that is a deal breaker I am afraid. The same guy in the video you posted Telerocker, also posted a review of the 55 stagger. That one is probably closer to the one I have, really twangy and awesome. I think I want to either go all the way with a Piledriver or go vintage and "safe" with 55 Stagger. The Brown Sugar is also on my list but not as high as those two previously mentioned.

The Piledriver sounds modern and rocky compared to the vintage(hot) telepickups. For heavier styles that's the one.
You're right, the BG50 is not the twangiest of the bunch. You better look at the BG52 and the '55 for that. If you want real twang go Country Boys. And yes, they take gain with authority.

I have a Boss pickup in my Telecaster, put it in a couple of years ago as the stock pickup wasn't very inspiring. I like how it sounds, chimey cleans and some pretty good rock n roll dirty. Nice bit of grit but not too driven it becomes humbucker-y. Wasn't really sure what to expect when I first put it in, just wanted something that could cover rock/blues/country/pop and all that stuff. Happy with it though, so if you want a specific tone then maybe go for something else.

Thank you very much! When it comes to if I want a specific tone or not, the answer would probably be more yes than no, but not entirely yes if you catch my drift. In my eyes the Telecaster has always been a country guitar. Some country stuff are quite cool but not my main genre at all, and I mainly got a Tele to satisfy my dad's wish: trying to replicate a steel guitar sound from a conventional electric guitar. I tried the guitar before I got it, through a Dr Z something something amp and a shiteeload of pedals. I noticed the Tonebone Hot British which I had heard so much about, but never tried in person before. Not being a particular pedal- nor much of a country-guy, I struck a chord not sure what to expect really. So I was standing there, playing through a boutique clean amp, a pedal the owner characterized as "a cranked Vox AC30" and a completely stock Tele nailing some of the most awesome high gain rock, and even metal tones I have ever heard! From that moment on, the Telecaster was equally a rock n roll machine as well as a country twang machine. Where things are standing right now, I am leaning towards the 55 Stagger to be honest. I read a review of it on the TDPRI forum, and he said that the 62 custom was his favourite tele pickup before he got the 55. And one thing I forgot to mention: I also tried a Baja tele (50's), that was probably a little bit better for overdriven tones but totally lacked that awesome twang. So I guess I just solved my own dilemma... The topic of this thread should be changed to "55 Stagger vs Brown Sugar" now, haha

Alright, so I ordered a set of The Boss, two 280k BKP pots, 0.022 Jensen cap and a 4 way switch today. The slightly higher value of the pots, together with the stainless steel saddles should brighten things up enough to get some twang and still enough power for rock! Really excited, the pickups have big shoes to fill, hehe!
One quite big advantage of The Boss is that it has about the same DC as the Nantucket and Riff Raff, and because they are wound with the same wire I expect the output to be very similar. With the 62 Custom pickups I have to run much more gain on the amp to get the same amount of saturation, compared to my other guitars.

Loving Born to Run era Springsteen a ton, that Hammersmith Odeon Live `75 is the best freaking thing....that Thunder Road version....oh my....., anyhow, I really look forward to your thoughts on it. I am looking to by a tele, and a lot more, once I am done studying and earning money and the Boss seems like it could be my dream, but I am also hesitant for the same reasons as everyone.
