PIG 90s in Gibson SG
« on: March 17, 2016, 06:18:55 AM »
Hi Forum members....I need some help. I have a Gibson SG I just purchased and it's on it's way. I loved the look of the guitar and always wanted an SG but this one comes with mini humbuckers. I play modern hard rock, almost metal style of music and I'm thinking I may need to replace my bridge pick up to suit my needs. I'm mainly a rhythm player. My only options are pretty much mini humbuckers or P90s. I'm thinking of going with the PIG 90s. Is that a good combo with an SG? I'm not sure what other options I have besides that. I should add that the guitar is a 60's or 70's tribute and comes with some Alnico 2 mini humbucker pick up, I think it's a 495-R.

I have a Stockholm in my SG Junior.

If had a guitar with two P-90s I'd probably go for the Stockholm/Supermassive combo.  SGs suffer a bit from boomy neck thin bridge  pickup syndrome so getting a neck pickup from a slightly less powerful set is often a good idea.

The Stockholm in my Junior is probably as aggressive as you would want.  Unless you are going for a real '70s type of high output pickup you might find it better than the Pig '90.  It is more modern sounding.

The Epi SG in the video below has a Supermassive set.  The Stockholm is basically an overwound Supermassive.

I thought the Pig 90 was ok in my SG but had something weird going on in the mids that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe just too "throaty" in that pairing. It sounds good but not right for the kind of sound I want from my SG. Here's a clip I did ages ago when it was in there (MQ neck for the leads) - https://soundcloud.com/tom_the_beast/160311-2

It sounds more at home in my all-mahogany LP Custom I think. Great pickup for stoner rock grind :) It's almost humbuckery to my ears at full blast but sounds nice and twangy when you roll the volume down (as I did for the intro of that clip above)

The alnico Warpig in my SG Special is very throaty so I am not surprised that a Pig '90 would be like that.

I find it to be pretty versatile for what I do though, more so than the alnico Nailbomb, which has a hairiness to it that doesn't work well in some situations.

Thanks for the repsonse guys...Well, I guess it would be either BKP Pig 90s or Stockholms or...I also have the option of sticking to mini humbuckers like the lace nitro hemi  or drop and gain...Which would be tighter, punchier, and more suited for the SG, BKP pig nitro/stockholms or the lace minis? feedback appreciated.

Aahhh. I think I'm sticking with the Stockholm or PIG 90s. I've never had a P-90 style pickup and the demos on the site sound great...Not sure I want to settle for a mini version of a humbucker...

Agent Orange....you were right. The stovkholm bridge is perfect for what I need. Tried the pig 90 as well. Didn't quite do it for me. Too saturated and not as clear!

How does the Stockholm compare to the Pig 90 tonally and in output? I like the Pig 90 but I agree, sometimes it seems a little too thick and not clear enough

The Stockholm bridge is certainly a great match for my SG Junior.  If I had the option of a neck pickup I would go for a Supermassive as a good match for the Stockholm in an SG

Stockholm I would guess is more cutting in the low mids and has a tighter bass response.

The Stockholm has some of the characteristics of an alnico Nailbomb but is less hairy.

The pig 90 bridge to my ears is just darker than the stockholms, especially when playing clean. It does not have that "chime" as much. But honestly, I couldn't tell much of a difference when playing in high gain settings. The difference was maybe in response. I felt the stockholms were more responsive, maybe have slightly better pick attack, and like I said, less saturated. I just found no reason to use the pig90 after trying both the pigs and stockholms. The stockholm does what the Pig90s can do without being super high output and saturated. I would also say for certain that the Pig90s are more limiting in terms of sound. Stockholms are definitely more versatile. The pairing with a supermassive neck is the way to go too. The pickup set (stockholm bridge and supermassive neck) turned my SG into a totally different animal, really did. But I was going from mini humbuckers to these BKPs...Again, I'm not a seasoned professional musician with superman hearing powers. But this all is just my gut feel. Hope this helps!
