Time for a change in hummers
« on: March 22, 2016, 06:13:30 PM »
I want to get my Crawler (n) and Abraxas (br) out of my Rg550 and I was thinking some thing a little more cutting and agressive.
The things that popped in my head are the Emerald (n) and the Cold sweat (Br)

The bridge is where I am most undecided as I have also considered another nailbomb or another Miracle man.

I am using the guitar for Black label society and Extreme, so the Mm is the obvious choice but I don't want to repeat any BKP's. I want to experience them all.
The Ry doesnt have enough bottom but can do a nuno squeal etc.

Whaddaya finks?

Holydiver bridge and Emerald neck is a tried and tested combination and will sit very well in an RG
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

This is sure as heck worth looking at. My main question would be how the Crawler neck and EM neck compare in terms of aggression. I know the EM is less rounded and smooth, but then again in its way the Crawler is rather leading in that department.

In case you have not had it IŽd throw in both the HD neck and even perhaps an MQ neck. Slarti did a wonderful description of the HD neck. And gathering from that the MQ neck is roughly a cross over between that and a SC with balls.
IŽd recommend a listen on those two.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I am not too familiar with BLS (in fact I purchased one CD and then noticed that I must have mistaken them for Pride and Glory). The Extreme tone points to the Cold Sweat bridge. I must say though that the CS bridge can be very bright in some guitars and coming from the Abraxas bridge, the CS will definitely have more cut in the high end, even though I did not compare them in the same guitar.

From comparisons of the Holydiver bridge and Abraxas bridge in the same guitar I feel that there will not be too much of a difference, other than the HD having a bit more output and compression.

Cheers Stephan

Do you find Abraxas bridge and HD bridge similar sounding?

Nuno and Zakk both use Ceramic Pups.
Cold Sweat is arguably BKP's best shout for Nuno and in a les Paul a cold sweat will get you close BLS but in a super start i'd definitely say miracle man.

Thanks guys!

It seems our minds are all on the same track pretty much.

I already have a HD and MM bridges in my RG's so I wish to avoid those.

I hadn't considered the HD tho! Good shout.
I'm not worried about how the CR and Em necks compare really. I do know i want to step away from the fatness.

BLS really took me by surprise!
Between the albums Blessed Hellride and Hangover Music vol VI there's a massive variety and in my opinion not a bad song on either.
The Rg in question is the warmest of all the ones I own plus Cris Broderick used one in an Rg so it's gotta be good enough fer moi.

Holy divers feel more compressed than Abraxas which is a little less aggressive but with more sparkly over tones.

My thoughts too but I want to try a new BKP too :D

I think the Emerald neck might be fatter than you want.

A CS/HD combo might be the ticket.

CS bridge has good tight bottom end with plenty of balls. Top end is crispy rather than shrill.

The Holydiver neck is excellent. It's not as fat as the Emerald neck and has a slightly more vintage feel to it. The pickup is bright but not shrill. I loved it

Have you thought about something more modern?

I would feel 'safer' putting a Juggernaut on that RG than a Cold Sweat. And this is coming from someone who loves/ownes an Abraxas and even a Mule.

I do understand wanting more cut and agressiveness from an Abraxas, especially if you tune down.

I'm with you on that one.
