Warpigs and Super Distortion
« on: April 05, 2016, 03:10:01 AM »
Hi,
I own a strat mount with a Dimarzio Super Distortion, I use it for 10 years and plan to upgrade to Warpigs,
But I check the tone profile of Warpigs and Super Distortion, I found their EQ are very close to each other,
(also Ceramic, high output), so, do they sound similar?
If not, what is the tonal difference between these two?
Thanks!   :cheesy:

I've tried the Alnico Warpig, own a Ceramic Warpig, and am a tentative fan of the Super Distortion also.

I would say the Warpig has a bit more low end and output than the Super Distortion. Level of compression is the same so there are similarities in the "feel" of each pickup.

However, both of the Warpigs destroy the Super Distortions in terms of clarity and punch. The Alnico Warpig has a very nice clean tone additionally.

I can't comment on the ceramic version of the Warpig, but the alnico version is very throaty

The alnico version is no near as hot as a super distortion, in my experience

Didn't try the cerāmica, though

I like the c-bomb as an alternative

Thank you for reply,
If I want more natural tone, not too characteristic sound , which version should I choose (Ceramic or Alnico?)
And I don't understand what is throaty sound, is it sound like dire straits money for nothing tone?
Is the "warping" is trying to capture the Tony Iommi tone? or it is just a djent metal tone?
Thank you!

The "throaty" thing we talk about is a certain gnarly thing in the midrange once gain is added. Like raspy singing. Think Cory Taylor when he goes into that rock raspy breakup sound. At least that is what I hear.

The Warpig is the idea of capturing the mojo of that Iommi tone in a pickup. As with all the inspirations it essentially gives you the ballpark of the end result. The warpigs tone was not done with anything like this pickup (perhaps more of something like the Nantucket or such, not sure on the era without looking things up), but many things coming together. This pickup though with most amps will get you in the ballpark. Due to that it also has more applications. Add a different flavor around it and a lot of things open up.

I hope that made sense. Hard to describe.

The alnico Warpig works very nicely in a brighter guitar, so I am guessing it will work well in the Strat.
