Recommendation for Korina body
« on: April 24, 2016, 04:53:10 AM »
Just picked up a Reverend Sensei.  The stock Railhammer humbuckers sound good, but not stellar.  And they're a little hot for me.  I know Korina is similar in tone to mahogany.  From what I've read, slightly less in the low mid department.

I'm leaning towards something in a vintage output for classic and blues rock.  But want something that will complement the Korina.

What are your thoughts?

You can't go wrong with a set of Mules. Genuine 59 Les Paul-tones and very balanced pickups. I love them.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

How would you describe the acoustic sound of the instrument?  If it is fairly dark you might want to try Riff Raffs

IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM

Mules are definitely a possibility.

I played the Sensei and my LP acoustically side by side.  The Sensei surprised me with a couple of thing.  First, it's much louder than the LP when played acoustically.  I wasn't expecting that.  Second, the Sensei is slightly darker on the treble strings.  The bass strings are very close.  Riff Raffs are the others I was considering.

The others I was considering were the Black Dogs.  Reason being is the Reverend's bass contour.  Having that extra bottom end when you want it, and being able to dial it out when you don't, seems appealing to me.  They are slightly hotter than I was thinking... but not by much.

Keep in mind that the Black Dog doesn't sound typically classic PAF like a Mule due to the different wire BKP uses.

Good to know.

I was thinking Black Dogs, Mules or Abraxas. I think all three would have a lot to offer.

FWIW my favourite ever recording guitar (the one I always go back to when I can't get the rock sound I want out of any others!), is a korina singlecut (with maple top) with a black dog in the bridge. A real fat, articulate, balanced sound. Having said that, I have heard others say that the BD is really toppy, so it seems that it might be very picky about the guitar it goes in, because it's not at all toppy in mine...
Bridge: (A)Pig, HD, Jugg, PK, (A)NB, Crawler, Aftermath, RY, Abraxas, Emerald, BD, VHII, RR, Cobra, Sinner, Trilogy, Stockholm, Supermassive.
Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.

By "toppy", I'm guessing you (they) mean a lot of top end?  Just going by the diagrams on each pickup's page, the Mules have just as much treble as the BDs.

The treble may be indicated as the same but it won't feel that way to play because the Black Dog also has a bit more bass and a good chunk more mids. The Black Dog won't lack in treble but the whole thing should feel more muscular and thicker and don't forget that the Black Dog uses a far more modern wire which will also affect the tone.
