Aftermaths doing Strapping Young Lad \m/ >_< \m/
« on: May 04, 2016, 01:30:45 AM »
I've recorded a backing track of drums, bass and synths so that my friend and I can play and sing along to it at the local jam night. Cheating, I know, but nobody that frequents the place knows any SYL and we've taken it upon ourselves to get the place pumping a bit, blow the cobwebs off the "Mustang Sally" types and put a bit of fire in their veins!

My mate will be doing vocals and I'll be doing backing vocals and guitar, so when this track is played live it'll only be the bass drums and synths and maybe the second guitar track just to fill it out a bit.

But I've recorded a backing with guitars included as I think we're going to do a full recorded cover one day soon, and here's what I have so far:

https://soundcloud.com/nadzilla/syl-love-cover

One guitar track hard left, one guitar track hard right, both recorded with my Agile Septor Pro with BKP Aftermath set through:
Boss NS2 -> Boss GE7 -> Digitech Bad Monkey -> Jet City JCA20H -> Jet City JCA24S -> Cab double-mic'd with SM57 + Unidyne -> Focusrite Audio Interface -> Cubase.

Other instruments for interested folks:

Bass: Squier Jaguar Bass -> Trace Elliot  GP12SMX -> DI out from head to Focusrite Interface -> Cubase -> 2 x Bass tracks simultaneous recording, one with distortion in the mids then blended.

Ambient background guitar: Same guitar as above, but straight into EZ Mix on Cubase with Devin Townsend Hi-Gain Solo preset.

Drums: Custom Metal Foundry kit in SD2.0

Synth: Padshop in Cubase.

Whole track mastered with an EZ Mix preset.

Effin sick mate! Couldn't help myself but to headbang and scream along to the track, my alltime favourite by SYL

Cheers dude! I love this song. Probably going to do Force Fed next, love the chorus in that.

Too bad Devin's not performing any SYL songs live anymore, saw him over a year ago live and it was all DT Project material unfortunately...

Yeah, although I do understand why he's not doing them any more. I feel the same way about some of my old band's stuff, just reminds me of a bad time in my life that I'd rather not re-live, even through a musical memory.

Having said that, I was ecstatic when I went to see him do the Retinal Circus gig in London, and Jed Simon came out to play "Detox" and "Love?" at different parts of the set. Utterly phenomenal! Had to embrace that experience as I'm pretty sure he's not going to play that stuff again, at least not for a while longer anyway. Although I did catch that little twinkle in his eye when they played "Love?" and pretty soon after that he played it again with DTP in South America because they hadn't played there as SYL back in the day.
Oh, and last March in Bristol he did an acoustic break mid-set and did an acoustic version of "Love?", which whilst not as amazing as the full version, was still quite a nice surprise! ^_^

Maybe he'll  make peace with his old, inner-self and start playing them for fun with no emotional attachment. I hope he does!

That would be great. I do understand him though, if his music is good because he's playing and writing what he feels and he's not in that state of mind anymore, who am I to complain?

Woah mate, I envy you. I'm stuck in Austria and some bands seem to avoid the country purely because Germany is the bigger neighbour. Bummer. But who knows what the future holds? Devin is always good for a surprise  :azn:

He's pretty receptive to fans if they tell him he's never played their country and he has fans there, try harassing him on Twitter! I try to see him at least once on every tour he does of the UK.

This is my friend and I just having a laugh with it at Jam night:

By this point I had consumed a large amount of Rum.

My friend doesn't get to sing much, so I try to get him involved whenever I'm doing something heavy.

Amp in the vid is a Fender that my friend rebuilt, can't remember the model but it's a 1x15 combo. Sounds like a beast! We weren't sure how it would do with the whole metal thing, but it grinds like a mofo!

As for the recording, the amp I used is my Jet City JCA20H and a Jet City cab.

The Agile has Aftermaths.
