Juggernaut, C-Hawk, or Impulse?
« on: June 09, 2016, 01:17:47 PM »
Hey everyone! Back for a recommendation!

All of my guitars have been either mahogany or alder with a maple neck, but I have a new one on the way pretty soon that's a bit different!
This one is ash with a 5pc wenge/bubinga neck and an ebony fretboard. It's a 6 string, 27" scale super strat that will be in Drop A.
As far as material goes, it's Slipknot-esque but a bit more experimental and modern.

I have a C-Hawk in my Jim Root Strat, which is mahogany with a maple neck, and that sounds pretty good being that the guitar was pretty dark but the C-Hawk balances that out. I have Juggernauts in two alder/maple guitars which sound great as well!

I'm not sure which way to go with this one, as I honestly don't know if the guitar is going to be bright or dark, but I can assume it'll be mid-driven with the wenge neck. The other option I was considering is the Impulse.

I'll reach out to some people that have played similar tone woods, but in the mean time...
What do you think?

The impulse has very neutral mids, so there's less likely to be an offensive midrange frequency that sticks out in a bad way. I've got  a few guitars with wenge necks, they have a very immediate and present midrange, it's something to be careful of. They don't seem to agree with pickups that have a lot of high-mids.

I actually own a 27" 7 string with a wenge/roasted maple neck with a pale moon ebony fretboard and ash body with a maple top. I used it as one of the testers for the impulse set. Works great in that format.

Can't speak for the other ones you're considering as i haven't tried them in that sort of tonewood.
Hope that helps!

@northlane.josh Thanks! I asked a buddy of mine who's played the guitar I'm getting and he said it's on the bright side too, so I'll cut the C-hawk out of the equation. Looks like I just have to decide between the Juggernaut and the Impulse. I've played the juggs before though, so I may give the impulse a shot.
