Emerald pickups!!!
« on: June 28, 2016, 09:15:31 PM »
Hello,
I have been a long time viewer and new to the forum.i have recently changed my pickups in my les Paul from Suhr Aldrich to a set of emeralds .i absolutely love them. They sound perfect for my playing style(rock, hard rock,). I am surprised at the lack of comments/reviews on here.they have handled everything that I have thrown at them with ease, even my attempts at metal. Some of the questions that I see are of people asking for heavy/rock sound clips.I am not very good on the computer but will try to upload something in a rock setting.for anybody asking, they handle all styles of rock great.
Thanks,
Jim

It is a bit weird. The neck has seem great comments and gets recommended. Especially together with a HD bridge as it is such a great fluid combination of vintage and modern. The bridge has fallen off a lot though. When I started here they actually were recommended rather often, especially for metal. That was cause their tight brightness makes them amazing for modern metal, when the amp is right, in a way that has more character to the tone. Since then the metal range was greatly expanded upon though, so they fell off.

If I had a modern metal amp and wanted to play that style I would probably still grab an EM bridge.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I have a 7-string set in my PRS 7 and love them.  I'm thinking of getting a 6-string set for my PRS Zach Myers, as my other preferred pickups (PRS McCarties) seem like they may be too dark for that guitar.  (It does seem to me that Emeralds work best in guitars that are either inherently dark or in low tunings.)

I tried an Emerald set in my PRS SE Custom 24 and while the neck was sublime, I couldn't get the bridge pickup to work. The tone was fantastic but it was just too bright in that guitar but I can imagine them being perfect in a Les Paul.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

It sounds great in my les Paul, which is (was) dark sounding.the neck pick up is the best I've ever played through.i can see why it has a lot of fans.i couldn't get a lot of info on the bridge pickup though but Ben at bkp suggested it for my taste in tone that I was looking for.i absolutely love it.playing through my Marshall or vox, either one sounds great with it.I love the clarity it has.using the volume knob changes dynamics big time.I hope to get some audio samples soon

The emerald is an acquired taste.  The high end is absolute perfection the best in the BKP line in my opinion BUT and it's a big but  (And others have said the same) I just can't get on with the lack of/non existent low end and this was with a powerful amp and les paul custom.

Still it's a fantastic pickup but I'd say i's very 'specialist'.  You've gotta be a certain type of player or have a certain type of rig/setup to get the best out of it certainly not one for average Joe.  Beautiful lead tones but really didn't like the rhythm side...I am a mainly metal head though

Yeah I haven't tried them through a high gain amp.i use a 79 50 watt Marshall and ac15.for what I'm looking for they are perfect.the closest metal I play might be maiden,priest,ect..they are pulling those songs off great.do you play a lot of detuned songs? I haven't tried any different turnings yet.closest I venture is a half step down lol
