BLACK DOG bridge as lead pickup? BD users, need opinion!
« on: August 30, 2016, 09:52:49 PM »
Hi,
Black Dog bridge grabs my attention for a long time, but unfortunately there`s little info around here. It`s mids heavy, more vintage, rock version of Holydiver ect
But how does Black Dog bridge performs on leads, any type, from melodic mellow solos to fast shredding, apreggios, sweep picking?
Is Black Dog a good lead pickup? (not all BKPs are e.g Cbomb while being fantastic rhythm pickup, leads in my opinion are the weakest point)

Black Dog users, can you give me your opinion about BD as a lead pickup?

many thanks!

Right me too. I tend to play arpeggios on the bridge pickup out of laziness in live settings lol but have grown to love the sound. I think i hear a ceramic quality on the clips but it is an alnico so that's what sold me. As long as its fluid as it is throaty i think i will be satisfied. ill update as soon as i can.
Miss you Dime.

It has that half c--ked wah thing even without any pedals, knda like old dimarzio pups
It doesn't have the compression of the Holy Diver, so it's not as fluid, but it's more articulate

Many thanks, how would you compare leads on Black Dog to e.g CBomb? I`ve been using CBomb for more than 3 years now, and to be honest leads are the weakest point of that pickup. Too aggressive, hairy, more screaming than musical. Would Black Dob be less aggressive and more fluid and musiacal than CBomb?
Tomorrow I`ll go to my band`s rehearsal room and finally test my new Miracle Man in my second guitar, it will give broader spectrum, but so far let`s focus on leads CBomb vs BD.

cheers

definitely less aggressive and more musical, but I wouldn't say it's more fluid
the c-bomb is probably the most compressed and most forgiving bkp I had in my guitars, despite of being very aggressive
it's just that its voicing doesn't favour the leads
the black dog is definitely much more unforgiving
I love the miracle man lead tone
quite different from the nailbombs and anything else I've heard

what do you mean by saying that BD is much more unforgiving?
and one more question, because here on the forum there are vastly different opinions about how bright it is.
is Black Dog bridge bright or dark pickup?
I`ve found all opinions here.

being more middy, articulate and less compressed demands that you play better
the c-bomb kinda makes up for subtle mistakes

regarding the high end, I'd say it's on the dark side, but it's not dark voiced
the midrange sounding makes it sound very in-your-face
it definitely has less top end than nailbombs but the nailbombs are much darker voiced in the mids

why don't you consider a holy diver instead?
the diver is usually a safe bet for most guitars
