What would be the best wood for a Telecaster custom, Ash, Alder, Swamp Ash ect? Plus instead of a humbucker in the neck, would a Mississippi Queen do a nice job there with a brown sugar in the bridge?

Can you believe, last time I was at Phil's we never got around to playing any Teles OR Strats!!

I think we're hanging out this week tho, prior to TO rehearsal. I'll let you know what I think when I play em.

Brown Sugar and Alnico IV would fricking rock big time - I have considered a Squier Fat Tele just for that combo....

I know there just tone machines! What do you think of a MQ in the neck?

I have one on my chambered alder bodied Esprit and it is an absolute revelations - it can easily go from Peter Green slow blues to Lesley West raunch - and has Robben Ford to a tee.

I don't play thrashy stuff so I can't help there - but it sounds the balls and more....

Ash or swamp ash is great for Tele's IMHO.

Go for swamp ash as it has the antique tone

Take a look at Loristra guitar bodies, handmade in the UK

I've just recieved one of their bodies through the post and the grain is awesome

Ramsay at Loristra sometimes sells them on ebay, this one didn't sell but I bought it through his website

It screams out for Brown Sugars to be installed 8)

It's actually a two piece body but he has done a skewed joint through the control cavity. When the scratch plate and chrome cover are on ,you
won't be able to see the join, not though you can now.

Fender used Swamp Ash in the early days and then changed to Alder in the 60's for the Tele's.

Johny - consider alder for a smooth sounding tele
Ash and swamp ash will have a brighter springy kind of sound which is classic but maybe more lively than the mellow you speak of

Avoid Poplar! wierd tone - especially for a tele

Also if you are having one made - consider Korina - very musical
Same stuff I made my V out of and I have also made a Musicman Axis style with 2 P90s in - wonderful sounding guitar

All my tele's are ash. The neck makes the tone very different on them. I have 3 rosewood and 1 maple.

In the maple, I am putting a Brown Sugar with Slowhand neck - I'll get the pickups at LGS so it is an act of faith at this point!

I have a Piledriver and Mini-Mule in my esquire, and really love that tone.

The 62 has original pickups, but I think the Yardbird set would have the same sound

Finally I have a Japanese 62, with a SD Broadcaster and a Danelctro Lipstick Tube. At some point I will put a BK bridge pickup in it.

The MQ is a great neck pickup and I think it would sound excellent with a brown sugar or a piledriver!
