A H-H set for LP - similar to Black Winter
« on: September 27, 2016, 11:48:03 AM »
Hi all!

I've been a Duncan guy for a long time now, but now I think it's time to take a plunge and get a set of BKP's. I recently got myself a lightweight ESP Navigator N-LP-480Ltd, which is practically an R9. First I tried a Slash set there, and found it a little weak for my use. Sold the set and put in a set of Black Winters I had laying around for the mean time. I really enjoy the tone I get from the bridge pickup (the neck could be a little brighter) but the power and grit are a little overbearing with such a loud guitar.

So, since the pound is a bit cheaper for the time being, I plan to buy a set directly from BKP. But which set? I like the tone and feel of the BW bridge, I am more open to other kinds of neck pickups. I guess the Duncan Distortion with more presence could approximate the BW bridge tone.

Thanks :)

I really can't think of one that close to the Black Winter.  The Painkiller maybe?

You want a ceramic magnet and highgain output? I think ceramic Nailbombs or a Miracle Man-set.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I still think the Painkiller is the closest BKP to the SD Black Winter

Here's another video, this time in an SG:

Thank you for your suggestions :) Indeed the PK appears closest by spec, but I have tried both the BW and the PK in one of my superstrats once, and found them quite different beasts. I'm sure this LP is a poor match to the PK based on that experience (I might remember wrong of course).

The Nailbomb (C) sounds good though, but how about the Cold Sweat? I use Duncan Customs (Custom 8 & regular) in my LPC's and they are great for my style - is the Cold Sweat a very different pickup then? I wouldn't mind a bit less high end and more midrange push (hence the A8 mod) and of course added string separation is a plus.

The C-Bomb has more mids than the scooped CS.

I'm interested in what you found out comparing the PK and the BW. I have the BW and I'm still trying to decide for a PK (afraid it's too harsh as the Cbomb I am not very happy with) or an Impulse.
