Moving on from the 63 Veneer boards.
« on: October 13, 2016, 09:30:26 PM »
I love these pickups and have a full set in a guitar. But I'm looking for a little extra something to go into another guitar.

As it stands the Irish Tour & Cobra sets have my interest.
How do these compare to the 63's? Output, voicing, feel etc?

If anyone has experience with these pickups I'd love to hear your opinion :)

Hello!

This is my first post, and yes, I have experience of these pickups.

It depends what you want them to do. The '63 veneer is a 'vintage' type, so bright, balanced, not very hot.

The Irish Tour is hotter than these, they're more of a medium hot pickup. They're powerful and sound great with overdrive, if not the most versatile.

The Cobra is a more definite change, there's instantly a lot more bass, it's a lot louder. It's ceramic and sounds that way; it sounds hotter, a lot hotter. More modern, much more focussed. The attack is still like a single coil, but it doesn't sound anything like the '63. It's been designed for heavier styles.

In the end I went for the Slowhand with a baseplate, flat magnet profile in the bridge position. With the tone back to 6/7 it's like a humbucker in tone, maybe a PAF. It sounds really good, compared to '63; less treble, more power, more mids, a bit fatter. Compared to the Irish Tour; more mids, maybe more power, smoother treble. Compared to the cobra; far more natural and organic, less bass/mids, more treble.

If there's anything else, let me know!
