Need help choosing metal pedal..
« on: April 04, 2006, 07:17:27 PM »
Hey, i'm thinking about buying a small pedal for my guitar. Mostly for metal, I have a marshall amp and the gain on that does sound good, but sometimes its just not what i'm after. I'm after a pedal that I can get a good range of metal tones for and preferably not too expensive  8) .

Also on an aside, also looking for a wah wah pedal. Cry baby the best bet?

Thanks  :D

Maybe this (two birds and one stone an all that).
Not tried it but have owned/tried Dunlop Crybaby from Hell and that had ALOT of gain on a kick switch on it's base. Gave alot of distortion doing this.
However, may not be your bag.

I don't think so.  Try a Budda wah.  Or, if that's too expensive, maybe a Vox.

HA!

That was great, bro ... I fell out of my chair with that one!!

Seriously, tho ...
Yes, I endorse HBE, but I wouldn't recommend a pedal that I didn't think did the job, especially for Metal. (Something of a specialized field for me)

The Big D is 5 OD/Dist pedals in one box, each with 3 voicings. That gives you 15 pedals in one!!

Find 15 boutique pedals for $200 and I'll eat my hat.

Even as a clean boost, the Big D is great.

I had a Line 6 Ubermetal for a while and before it cr@pped out it was an amazing pedal. Unfortunately it developed a fault which made it sound like there was a light phaser going on in the background. But it was an awesome pedal up until then. I plan on buying another when I get a good amp. I tried it with an Engl in the shop. Result  - the best metal tone I've ever heard.

But it still cr@pped out!
How can you recommend a pedal that doesn't work?

Thanks for all the replies i'll check those badboys out.

One of my mates has a Boss MT-2 and says its pretty decent. Anyone had any experience / know anything about it?

The MT-2 is fine for many applications. You should try it in your rig and see if you like it!

I had a Marshall Guv'nor distortion pedal back in the day and it absolutely made the sound of my old rig.  It wasn't the most versatile but it was great at what it did.

For more recent pedals, The Metalzone pedal is the most popular item at my favourite music store, and it seems to do modern metal really well.  I haven't played it myself and so can't vouch beyond there.

I dont endorse HBE (as my bedroom is my stage) but I wholeheartedly recommend the Big D - in fact I wouldn't bother looking anywhere else as it gives you all you want in one snazzy box.  Get one, you won't regret it.

explain to me again why you needed to run an uber metal through an engl? unless it was the classic tube engl model...

anyway, threadstarter- what exact amp do you have? if you have a tube amp, you may be better off with an overdrive or lighter distortion pedal to boost the OD that's already there...

I wouldn't recommend the crybaby- sounds very thin. I haven't tried any decent wahs, but i've heard good things about buddas, although they're meant to sound like "wow" rather than "wah".

it's not great for anything other than metal. It can also sound a bit thin.

I haven't tried it, but the keeley mod metal zone is meant to be good. That's probably the only "metal" distortion pedal i'd ever even think of buying (i'm not, i have an amp that can do metal, but if i were in your position...)

i just have a small marhsall practice amp (solid state) which is great for all i need at the moment (anything louder and id have my ass kicked by my flat mates :p). The distortion on it is good but I want a slightly more metal distortion sometimes and the amps one doesnt cut it.
