Fun with a soldering iron - crybaby and metal zone mods
« on: January 02, 2017, 02:35:27 PM »
Over Christmas I installed mods in a few pedals.

Firstly I put a Monte Allums kit into a Boss Metal Zone. It's completely changed the character of the pedal. I really like it now and it works well with my Magnum 44 due to all the EQ options.

Secondly, and more importantly, I put the Stinkfoot mods into my Crybaby. I've never been happy with the Crybaby, it always sounded anaemic. I converted it to true bypass and added a yellow fasel to it previously. Those things helped, but basically I still never touched the thing. The Stinkfoot mods seems to be very similar to other Crybaby mods. I only changed three resistors. Now it has the right sound -
More grit and a aggression to it. The sound is a bit fuller, there is a little more gain and the Q is tighter. It's definitely the characterful wah sound I wanted all these years.

I've been wahing like a crazy man since Christmas!

you wouldn't use the meat knife on crusty bread but, equally, the serrated knife and straight edge knife aren't going to go through raw meat as quickly

I have heard that the modded Metal Zone is great. Any chance of a sound clip?

As an experiment, I just tried running it straight into a desk via my Palmer Bonamassa speaker sim. Sounds more than usable. Very good even. I'll have a stab at recording something.

Here you go. Guitar -> Modded Metal Zone -> Palmer PDI03 JB -> DAW

I hate recording clips, but despite me recording the first thing that came into my head mistakes and all, I think you'll find it sounds fine.
