Pickup Choice Dilemma...
« on: May 19, 2005, 05:27:35 PM »
Right, I'm after a wee bit of advice/guidance here guys, so bear with me...

I have an old (1980), beaten up, refinished (a couple of times) Ibanez Iceman (an IC50 for other anoraks). I bought it with hot Ibanez V5 pickups (16.5k) which I hated the sound of & promptly flogged on eBay.

Currently it's got a pair of old SD's from my main guitar, a Tokai Love Rock (which is now proudly wearing a pair of zebra coil Black Dog's 8k & 10.2k).

I'm really happy with the Black Dog's, and will be putting a set of them in any future "main squeeze" guitar, but should I try another pickup in the Iceman, or should I stick with what I know (and what my gear is set up for)? Help???

The IC50 has a basswood body and a pretty thick coat of polyester paint.
My one was blue.....and I have owned or made a lot of Iceman guitars since.

You dont say which SDs you have in there at the moment.
it originally came with a creme V2 and a chrome covered super 70.
What sound do you like or would you like it to make?

What style of music are you gonna use that axe for?

Icemen are usualy used for the heavier styles. Kiss, White Zombie, System of a Down to name but a few. I'm thinking Nailbombs.

I've recently fitted a set of Miracle Man humbuckers to an old Iceman for a customer and they worked a treat.
The basswood body won't colour the tone much so it's really down to what type of tones you're after.
What would you like from this guitar?

Maybe we're all just in touch with our inner feline spirit.

Or a pride of pussies. ;)

Anyhoo, I digress...

The SD's that are in there are a '59 neck & JB bridge. I just find them a bit too "clinical" if you know what I mean.

Feline's right, the original spec for the IC50 was a V2 bridge & a Super70  neck (both uncovered black coils though). I've got a '78 IC200 (set neck) that I've put back to stock, with a set of Super80's (about 7.5k) that's nice, but I also don't like them too hot (say over 12k), the V5's that were in it when I bought it were a bit warm (16.5k ceramic), but I like the lower powered Alnico's (warmer sound IMO), so currently I'm leaning toward some Emerald's.

I'm a pedal & "nearly breaking up" amp fan, the main pedals are a Vintage Rat and a TK999US through Ch2 of an Ampeg VL-503. And yes, it's going to be used for a heavier style. ;) With my current set up, I reckon it does allow some of the woody warmth of the guitar through, as well as the biting O/D, but that's IMO o'course.

When I bought the guitar, it was hand finished (literally, brush strokes & everything!) in a see through red. I flatted it off, and then refinished it in Halfords finest gloss black (about 7 500ml cans, roughly 14 coats, flatted between each coat) followed by about 6 coats (3 500ml cans) of clear lacquer. It's actually turned out really well IMO, much better than when I bought it anyway!

Ratrod, don't forget that Steve Miller AND Tom Petty used to use different Iceman models as well as all those other bands you mentioned. My inspiration to own an IC50? A mid 80's thrash band called Celtic Frost.

Thanks for the help guys!
