Piledriver/Stockholm problem
« on: January 15, 2017, 01:52:12 PM »
Hi

I've used my Piledriver/Stockholm combo in my Haar Tele for a long time succesfully.  I have had the body redone in another colour and a Duesenberg trem added, and after rewiring it, I have no signal, only a loud hum.
I checked and rechecked, so did another tech, and everything is wired correclty.
When I connect it to a tuner, it always indicates somewhere above a g.

I had this problem recently when I wired my Explorer up with a push-push 'blower' bypass switch.  Do you have any complex switching arrangements in there?  I took the push-push out and replaced it with a regular pot and then it was fine.

I only figured out that the problem was in the push-push because when the switch was engaged the hum got slightly louder.  Nothing else had any effect, just the same non-musical humming.

I'm guessing there's a ground loop in there somewhere.

Double check that you have the connections hooked up with the correct BKP colour codes.

If the wiring has no errors then it might be one of the pickups

The P-90s can come with either the two connector wiring with the braided ground or a three connector version with the shield.  If it is the latter just check that you have wired it up correctly.

If the pickups worked alright before I will assume that there was not a manufacturing fault.  It must have happened when it was put back together.  Check the bridge ground

I checked and rechecked, everything’s wired right.
So I took the multimeter, and found that the poles of the P90 were connected to ground somehow.  That doesn't seem right.  I removed the P90 from the wiring, and I have perfect sound from the bridge now.

Is the guitar shielded?

Apparently, it is due to a faulty neck pickup.  I measured it, and it's all over the place.
I am going to try shorteninget the cable, maybe there is a bad contact because the solder went right through.

The guitar is as shielded as it was before

Try putting electrical tape under the pickup or painting the cavity with liquid electrical tape.  It might be the case that it's touching somewhere and that's causing an issue. If it works it's a cheap fix.
