Pickup recommendation for Fender Jaguar Classic Player HH
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:08:24 PM »
Hey guys,
So I am looking to get a new bridge humbucking pickup for my jaguar. I currently have the ability to split the pickup from single coil to humbucker. There is no neck pickup since I took it out and only use the bridge.
The type is music I play/write/what people say it sounds like would be Alt-Rock closer to bands in the vein of Blink-182 (self titled album), The Dangerous Summer (earlier albums), Fall Out Boy (earlier albums), Taking Back Sunday (earlier albums), Jimmy Eat World (earlier albums) etc.. so really that early 2000s rock/emo sound I suppose.

I've been suggested mule bridge pickup from someone but my fear would be the low output for the genre of music I play? I was also suggested by someone else the Rebel Yell.
Looking for some knowledge/guidance!

Regards
Robby

What are the tonal characteristics of the guitar?

If it is fairly bright the Crawler might be a good option, especially if you plan to do a coil split.

It's a jaguar so naturally it's on the brighter side. I wouldn't say mine is as chimey though as other jags

We have some Fender experts here and I suspect they will suggest the Crawler.

The only downside with the Crawler is that it is not as 'tight' as the more metal pickups in the range but in your application that could be a plus.

Yeah my issue with the site is the examples are either clean (which isn't a issue) or metal. There isn't much of inbetween (overdriven not distortion sounding) examples to help guide me with the use of these pickups in my genre/sound.
The crawler dp is a little more than the rebel yell but I feel the rebel yell was made with 80s rock tones in mind. I'm really just not sure how it would translate over into my tone garden.
You feel the fender experts there would also back the crawler?

That helps a little thank you, but he is playing through a Mesa and orange cab, both used for metal that have high distortion/beefier tones where I use a vox ac30 with celestion blues.
Someone also said look into the vintage hots like the black dog or emerald? I gave the example of circa survive

Emerald is as bright as the Rebel Yell, or brighter.

Abraxas would work.  Possibly Black Dog.  VHII might also be an option.  Emerald would be the last one out of that range that I would consider for a bright guitar.

The Crawler used to be in the Vintage Hot range apparently.  It's one of those pickups that doesn't fit cleanly into either.  It is the most vintage of the Contemporary range. I think it was moved into that range because it is like a hotter Abraxas.  Both the Crawler and Abraxas are closely related to the Mule.

The reason I suggested the Crawler is that it has the extra oomph that you want and has the best reputation for coil splits out of all of the BKP range.  You can hear how good it is for that in the video.  Many humbuckers sound too thin when split.

Interesting that you mention the Vintage Hot range because as I was reading this thread I kept thinking that either the Abraxas or Black Dog might be ideal. The Abraxas is essentially a hotter Mule and in many ways, sits between the Mule and the Crawler. The Black Dog also has strong elements of a classic voicing but is hot enough to do a job for you.
