Telecaster pickup for metal!
« on: February 01, 2017, 08:38:21 AM »
Hey everyone, this is my first post on the forum and I wanted to say hey first off. Now onto my question, I got a really nice American made tele for a hell of a deal that I couldn't pass up. Obviously stock tele's aren't super well known for being ready for aggressive music right out of the box. Now I've been thinking about having it rerouted for a bridge humbucker but if I can avoid it that would be cool. I play crust influenced hardcore like Alpinist (minus mensch), Fall of Efrafa and some heavier post metal/ sludge like Amenra and Cult of Luna. Not a fan of ultra high output stuff that sounds close to active pickups, I like a bit of warmth with an organic tone but needs to be decent for drop C. I know Bare Knuckle has some telecaster singles and I'm open to hearing what people have to say. I appreciate the advice and any help would be awesome :)

P.s. my rig is a Sovtek Mig 100H and an Ampeg V4 through an orange 4x12 and mesa boogie 2x12

Consider the Piledriver too. It is among the most metal pickups I have ever heard. Brutal as heck. Certainly raw and befitting anything with hardcore in the description.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Yeah I would be surprised if the Piledriver didn't do well with Alpinist and Fall of Efrafa type material.

There are definitely clips of it in Drop C online, not your style of music so the EQ on the amp is most likely set differently but you'd get the idea.  I'll see if I can fine one and post it

Tim from Tombsealer used a Tele, as far as I know it was just a Fender USA Standard, no Quarter Pound in it or anything.  He did have Izzy backing him on rhythm guitar with EMGs though.  They are at least as heavy as Amenra

Bert from my old d-beat crust band Terania uses a MIJ toploader Tele with a SD Quarter Pound in it, that has a lot of output, possibly more than you want.  I wired it straight to jack and he stopped using an overdrive.  He only uses overdrive when using his P-90 equipped Epiphone SG now, the Tele doesn't need it.  He is the guy who introduced me to Alpinist and Fall of Efrafa, he's right into that kind of sound.

EDIT:

These are the demos of the Telecaster with the Piledriver set in Drop C.
