Rebel Yell in Ash Explorer?
« on: March 15, 2017, 03:19:33 PM »
I bought a set of Rebel Yells for a PRS I had but the WF neck drove me to trade the PRS for a Suhr Modern Pro Satin (African Mahogany) and now I am torn between putting the Rebel Yells in my brand new Suhr or a 2004 Explorer Swamp Ash that I have.
I like the flexibility of the Suhr (SSV/SSH+) so I am not sure I want to start grinding off the mounting tabs and drilling out the holes for that one...I am leaning more toward replacing the 496R/500T in the Explorer.  Has anyone ever put this set in an Explorer? I'm guessing it won't have been Swamp Ash.  Can anyone tell me how the RY set compares to the 496/500 set?

Brighter and clearer with less bass.

RYs are pretty bright. Pretty sure that trait will follow through onto the explorer.

I have them in a PRS McCarty and I find them to be the perfect match with the dark hog.

I LOVE the eff out of the neck pick up. Neck pup has a piano-like quality and they are incredibly clear. Almost has a P90/Single coil vibe to it. Favorite neck humbucker ever.

The bridge is a close cousin to the A-Bomb. Not as brash or hairy, the RY is more of an "all-rounder."

I know people say that Rebel Yells are bright but I've had them in two guitars (a basswood superstrat and an ESP Eclipse - neither of which could ever be described as "dark") and I've never found them to be overly bright. In fact I would say that my Nailbombs are actually brighter.

All of the reports I've seen on the Rebel Yell / Explorer combination have been excellent, so I would try them in there.  I have an Explorer with a korina body (yellow wood) and that's a very dark instrument, I've found that  the brighter the pickup the better.  I went from A-Pig to A-Bomb because I had an A-Bomb laying around but I would have most likely have ordered a RY if I didn't have that laying around doing nothing.

They're in.  I've literally just installed them, so I'll give an update later.

Any ideas on pickup height for this set, BTW?
