Which pots for a HSS and how to wire..
« on: April 06, 2006, 10:09:37 PM »
Which value pots should I use in a HSS strat? I will be using a volume and single tone knob setup, not 2 tone pots as "usual".. I thought 2x500k.. but would 500k make the singles too bright? Also, theres a wire coming outta the back of my bridge, is this the ground?

I also have no real idea how to wire up a guitar, if someone has a simple diagram for typical strat wiring with a 4 conductor humbucker in the bridge, thatd be awesome.

cheers

Are you wanting any coil tapping on the humbucker?

I *think* you can put resistors somewhere in the grounding path of the single coils to make the (implicit) pot resistance values different from the humbucker, but I can't remember where I got that from.

I dont want to coil tap the humbucker, but in position 2 of the switch i wanted it so I have the inner coil of the humbucker, and the middle pickup selected, instead of the whole humbucker or whatever.

the wire coming out of the bridge will be a ground, or at least it should be.

using 500k pots will be fine for the singles, but you could use 250's if you wanted.fender used 1meg pots in the teles in the sixties and they sound just fine so like i said 500's should be good.

as far as  i know BKP base their HSS sets on a 5 way switch that gives you the screw coil of the humbucker and middle position single in parallel, are you going to be using BKP's?

also, i know you said you don't want to split the coils but you may find that a two way on/on switch would be perfect as it could give you hum/north single split which means you could easily switch the humbucker to the north coil for position two. its not as inconvenient as you might think using a two way coil split, its much simpler for quick switching than the three way ones.

after saying that, i would still hope that phillking will save the day.(He knows all things)

No I'm not using BKs yet, I have a Seymour Duncan CC for the bridge and my stock cheap singles. I ordered two 250k's and a 500k so I can experiment with the different ones. I might not wire up the humbucker to the tone, on my LP I have em disconnected so I might aswell do the same here.
