What Pickups?
« on: April 07, 2006, 11:52:21 AM »
Hi, I've started work on building my own guitar, and as I'm endlessly planing away (first lesson learned, when they offer to machine plane it for you for a tenner, say yes!!!) I'm trying to figure out what pickups to get. I'm using an ash body, a set maple neck and a rosewood fingerboard for a flat top double cut guitar with a tune-a-matic bridge strung through the body (keeping it simple  for my first attempt).
Musically I tend to straddle the line between hard rock and metal, more Alice in Chains than Lamb of God if you know what I mean, and the sound I'm after is one with a vintage quality to it, yet with a modern edge and a bit more bite. My amp is an Ashdown Fallen Angel 2X12.
Reading the product descriptions, I was erring towards the Emerald, perhaps with some allen bolt pole pieces for improved bass response, but I've noticed that hardly anyone here uses them. Why is that? I really like the sound of the Cold Sweats, but as I'm using quite bright tonewoods I'm worried that a ceramic pickup might not be warm enough. I know lots of people here praise the versatility of the Nailbomb, but I know that it is much too powerful for what I want, and I don't want to have endlessly fiddle with my volume and tone controls.

I would say check out the REBEL YELL. Sounds like exactly what you want. Big, warmish tone with as much push or clarity you could ask for!

Dave, I love your enthusiasm, but ...

Is SS using Rebel Yells in his Guitar Techniques tutorials?
I've thought about Crawlers, but the photo of Geoff keeps putting me off    Heh, I'm shallow I know

I'd go with To and say Rebel Yell..............I'm pretty sure Steve was using RYs in his GT tutorials........I'll ask him and find out.

Thanks guys, I listened to the RY clips and was like WOW! That is exactly the sound in my head, so it looks like that'll be the way I go. Now I just need to finish that d*mn planing........
