Hi guys!

So I have a Fender Jim Root Telecaster to mess around with... I love Telecasters but I hate signature gear. Not to fond of actives either... It runs stock 61/80 EMGs, right now. I'm "All Fender, 100%", so... I'm not getting an SG!! ;)

I want to hear your recommendations for the right BKP Humbucker upgrade for my HH Mahogany Telecaster for some fuzzy-heavy-distorted-doom-punk-harcore-stoner-sludge-metal, with an "alt-indie-psych twist" tones.

I play mostly dirty but there are some clean intros and "arpeggios/chording"... And the ocasional "messy-alt-inspired-dissonant-lo-fi-sludgy leads". All using my, soon to be upgraded, Orange Thunderverb. I'm sticking with Orange. Most probably a Rockerverb MKIII.

C Standard tuning!

What do you think will be the right BKP for me to get? Set or combo of two different models. I have an idea already but, I would like to hear you first.

All and tips and ideas on this will be very very welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

I play in the same tuning and style with an Explorer and an SG into a Peavey 6534+

The amp is very different from an Orange so YMMV ... I also tend to have some rasp in my sludge

My main gigging guitar is the Explorer as it has the better sustain, and I need that for one of the songs in particular.  It is quite a dark sounding guitar acoustically but it sounds good with a Nailbomb (A) set. I have a series/parallel switch on the neck pickup that I use during a clean intro.

The SG has a Warpig (A) set.  That used to be in the Explorer but was too dark there. It sounds nice in the SG, much more versatile and open. I have some issues with feedback in practices with this one so I don't tend to trust it live and it mainly functions as a live backup or studio guitar.  Part of the problem might be the fact that the pickups are open coil.  It seems to be sensitive to my body placement relative to the bass cabs and PA speakers.  It has a great sound for this style of music though.

I also have an SG with a Miracle Man in the bridge and Cold Sweat in the neck that I plan to have set up in the same tuning but currently it is in EADGBE so I can't really comment on that for this application.

I use the lead channel on my amp mainly.  Just high output pickups and a clean boost pedal driving it, no overdrives.  I can get black metal and hardcore sounds out of this setup as well.

I tend to think if I was relying on fuzz pedals I would want lower output pickups

Don't go Warpigs with an RV III. That could end up in mud. I think you should look at the Impulse, Aftermath, C-Bomb and Juggernaut. Maybe the Jugg has too much lowend for the RV.

TBH I don't understand the love for Oranges.

Of Mesas.

Maybe I am just weird.

Didn't understand the love for Mesa as well until I played a properly dialed in Dual Rectumfrier. The chest thumping sound I got was a lot of fun haha

For your pickup choices I was thinking Alnico Warpigs, but Telerocker might be right with the sound ending up beeing too muddy. Maybe something that is more evened out yet still has enough lowend. I own the Painkiller bridge and that thing is as aggressive as it gets but has more bottom end than I expected (and is still plenty of tight).

Yeah, you're weird

Each to his own, an amp is such an individual thing. I got three amps/stacks now: Orange RV 50 MKI, Diezel Schmidt and Hughes & Kettner Statesman 50. All sounding and responding differently. I mainly take the Diezel on stage the moment, brilliant amp. Still, the RVI is one my favs, but I don't play metal. For metal is a tad too soft on the lowend I think, though preamptubes make a difference. The Thunderverb might do metal a bit better.

The Diezel, now that I can understand ...

Although the Schmidt is Diezels 'vintage' amp, is has the Diezel signature sound: tight, direct respons, punch. The Schmidt has more mids than say the Einstein. The drivechannel goes from clean to a big rocksound, the third channel (which is actually a sort of boost) is Marshall-esque highgain territory, yet with the Diezel-sauce to it.  The cleans are majectic. Never had an amp with such superb 3D cleans. also thanks to the lush reverb. The downside is that this amps reveals all of your sloppy playing. ;-)
