Which BareKnuckle for PRS McCarty 594
« on: May 04, 2017, 05:50:21 PM »
Hello ladies and gentlemen,

A couple of years ago, I started to go in the Les Paul direction after years of being a (super) strat player.
Bought a Burny Les Paul Custom from the early 1980's. cr@ppy pickups (much compression, flat, I don't know), put Nailbombs in it, great guitar great sound now.

About 1,5 years ago I thought I would need a really good quality Les Paul style guitar.
Played a bunch of CS Gibsons, some PRS stuff (custom 22's and custom 24's, singlecuts), and some more stuff I can't even remember anymore.
Eventually sat down with three PRS McCarty 594's, a gibson R7, R8, and R9 and a Heritage, and for me, one of the 594's really won hands down
because of its unamplified sound (enough brightness, really nice "ring" in its acoustic sound) and playability.
It is equipped with PRS 58/15LT pickups, which are pretty nice..
However, they don't have heavyness that the Nailbomb pickups have (obviously); I feel like I am really missing the "oomph" with this guitar, but the attack-tone of the 58/15LT pickups is really "alive"
where the Nailbombs seem to have a less complex and/or flatter "attack", or actually the first part of a played note (oh man, how to describe this properly...hopefully someone knows what I mean).

Which Bare Knuckle Pickup (especially the bridge pickup) could give me more balls, than the PRS 58/15LT's, but retaining the complexity of these 58/15LT's?
I mainly play rock and heavy rock music.
Nailbombs, Irish Tours, C-Warpig7, Cold Sweat7, Apaches

Maybe black dogs? They are pretty versatile from what I've read.
Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)

vhII set should work
they have this deep low end and articulate top end response, but it's still open in the mids, like a paf-type pup

Thanks for these suggestions!
When listening to the sound samples on the site, I think I might like the VHII more than the Black Dog, but I like the Mule more than the VHII.
Would a Mule be a good choice? I'm not sure if it would be different enough from the stock bridge pickup.

The Mule is brilliant 59 PAF-copy and has a superb balance, but not the oomph and aggression like a Nailbomb. The Mule takes highgain very well though. The VHII has more lows and balls, but is a different beast: non-compressed, topend is prominent but not shrill, screams easier. I have both and for my playingstyle and musical preferences the Mule is my fav. It does everything, unless you want fericious metal.

the mule is absolutely amazing and is extremely versatile

but if you need heavier and tighter picking response under lots of gain, the vhII should do better
