new speaker day - vintage content
« on: June 22, 2017, 11:50:11 AM »
I'm sure some of you here know Johan Segeborn and his marvellous youtube channel.

Anyway, I watched his test of an old Laney Klipp cabinet fitted with Goodmans Audiom speakers. It sounded like Sabotage era Black Sabbath - my favourite era!

I just had to have some of these speakers. I found a pair on eBay fitted in some old 1x12 cabinets, the 12P-G, proper guitar version with aluminium dust cap.

I picked them up from the previous owner yesterday. The sturdy old 1x12 cabs were for PA originally I presume. They are made of particle board and weigh an absolute ton. I will try to find something more suitable.

Immediately I wired a jack into one of them and was really excited to try them out. To speak the truth they sound nothing like Johan's amazing demo. But still I liked the sound.

They were definitely British in tonality, but different to Celestions. Less lowend, so they seemed brighter overall. I'm not sure if its down to the aluminium dust cap, or something else, but they have a raw edge to them. I really liked that. The mids are a bit different compared to Celestions, they seem a little more punchy maybe.

Still the honeymoon period, so I don't want to make any grand pronouncements, but they sound just as good as vintage Celestions in my opinion. I liked the edginess and we'll see what the future holds. The closest Celestion to these I feel might be the G12H-30. Probably I sound 15% closer to Iommi now - but still nothing like him!

Main priority will be to ditch the existing cabs! Actually, I already removed the speaker from one and threw it out.

Sounds good.  It's always good to try something a bit more unusual.  And I'm sure they'll sound different in whatever cab you put them in, be interesting to see what difference it makes

There's no doubt these are good sounding speakers.

I picked up a beat up old Marshall 1x12 for one of them. Ironically the particle board cabinet sounds better. Not sure what's going on with that.

Do you have any cone-side pics, gwEm? How steep is the cone? How much doping? Large dust cap or small (I would venture to guess small).

I don't unfortuantely. If I take them out the cab I'll get some snaps for you (that might actually happen soonish as I'm moving things around). Heres one from the internet:

Speaking from memory I can make the following comments:

The cone didn't appear particularly shallow or steep - it seemed similar to a Celestion. The edge was quite heavily doped, but just the very edge only. The top edge had two ridges in it rather than just one.

They had a /large/ aluminium dust cap which is weirdly flat.

I've been continually A-Bing the last couple of days against my other cabs. They sound great. Even as they are (in some slightly naff MDF and particle board cabs) they sound better than Sidewinder/Plywood and Neo Creamback/Pine cabs. The main difference is the mids, they just seem punchier and with a cool rough edge to them. I think the top is a bit more detailed too, but thats not for me the defining difference.
