Pickup with vintage/attitude but also clarity on a low F#?
« on: September 18, 2017, 08:14:58 PM »
Hey guys, its been a while! I recently started a new exciting band/duo/project, which is calling for a quite distinct sound profile, since we both like the dominating sounds of low tunings, but also want to stay away from the usual two sounds that usually encompass downtuning: 1. Full on djent attack 2. Mud for days...

We're inspired by styles ranging from Deftones to Royal Blood to old school Muse, and would like a bit of vintage and old school grit.

I'm playing a 7 string, swamp ash body, ebony fretboard tuned to C#standard on the top 6, with a low F# on the bottom. For the Neck, i've pretty much decided on an Impulse, but the Bridge is a bit harder to settle on.

I'm looking for a distinct midrange/personality, with good clear cleans and splits, and clarity on the lowest string, but enough power and grind when riffing out. What to you guys think?

I'm leaning towards the Alnico  Nailbomb since i've always admirred the sounds i've heard from other players, but i've never actually owned one. The Ceramic sounds a bit too harsh on the high strings for my taste. Other thoughts have ranged from the Black Dog for the attitude, and perhaps one of the P-90's since i also love the sound and feel of them, but i think a full humbucker might be necessary.

Any Inputs? (Sorry for the small essay..)

Did you consider the alnico version of the Black Hawk?

I would tend to go for the Impulse bridge here though

COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM

Yeah, black dog sounds like it would do the job, BUT I actually still have alnico black hawk, and it does nice vintage-esque tones as well as brutal high gain, cleans are subjective though. Black hawk would be my choice personally. It would also match with impulse in the neck. Either go a-hawk or impulse (no experience with, but it should work).
Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)
