Pickup suggestions for a new guitar build
« on: October 04, 2017, 02:49:46 PM »
Hi All,

I'm building out another Warmoth guitar. This time its a Telecaster with mahogany body, wenge cap, wenge neck and ebony fretboard. I am currently stuck with decision paralysis on what type of pickups to get. I am considering the warpigs, but unsure. I'd like this guitar to be somewhat versatile but I lean on the side of heavier distorted tones. Any suggestions with the wood types what might suit this guitar?

Thanks!

Depends on the style of music you want to play. The Warpig has a tonne of tight focused bass, which you might actually like.
What bands are you wanting to sound like?
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

FYI I have the sinner Strat set and I'm in love with them. Bands in which I like the guitars tones would be Nirvana's Nevermind, Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream, Failure's Fantastic Planet.

I'd go for a more vintage-oriented humbucker... Warpig would be over the top IMO.
Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)

I would also consider HSP90's like the Supermassive and Stockholm. Plenty of chunk and roar,l P90 topend ring and looks to kill.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

You might be better off with a Crawler rather than a Warpig

I've been considering the H90's also. I'm in the choice paralysis mode right now. I have a Les Paul and a Start currently. So I have those tones covered. Maybe I'll jump in to the H90 world. The Supermassive and Stockholm are super interesting. I wish there were more sound clips available.

I've found the Stockholm to be quite versatile in my SG Junior.  Here's a demo I recorded a couple of years ago using it.  There are two guitars.  The lead guitar was a Telecaster with a SD Quarter Pound, I think.  Either that or it was his Epi SG with the stock Epi P-90s.  But I am pretty sure it was the Tele.  In any case the rhythm guitar track is the Stockholm guitar.

That demo is pretty sloppy.  Everything was recorded together in one take.

Basically I have always found the Stockholm to be like a supercharged version of the P-90 used on the early Discharge recordings.  Its basic tone is pure A5 P-90
