C-bomb vs. A-bomb vs. Black dog
« on: October 24, 2017, 07:02:09 PM »
Hey,

I was just wondering what pickup is better for playing standard/drop D (think dream theatre, tool, ...).

I don't really like dimarzio crunch lab or duncan JB (not quite aggressive enough).

I tend to prefer ceramic magnets for their tightness and less honky midrange as opposed to alnico, but I haven't tried the nailbombs.

I'd also like to know how NBs compare to black dog. I like my pickups fairly bright, but not super cutting in the high end.

Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)

It would be worth giving the Juggernauts a look going by your description, Capac - https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/pickup/humbucker/juggernaut

Anything but the Cbombs

I disagree
depends on the guitar, anyway
the c-bomb sounded amazing in my 73 les paul custom
sounded deep and compressed but still defined and not harsh like the a-bomb did in the same guitar

Interesting... Juggs sound a bit low mid heavy and overdone in mids overall.

How's the black dog? How is Cbomb for lead tone?

I definitely wouldnt recommend Cbomb for leads, actually in my opinion it`s its weakest point. I have one in Dean Cadillac.

Don`t get me wrong it`s an amazing rhythm pickup for hard, heavy rock (I wouldn`t call it metal pickup at all) with really good cleans for ceramic pickup, but leads are not great at all. Hairy, with fizzy aggressive top end, not fluid enough.

Mayones Flame CS2000 - Miracle Man (b), Sinner (m), Aftermath (n)
Warmoth Custom Telecaster - Cold Sweat (b) VHII (n)

That's a shame... Any experience with black dogs anyone? They are supposed to be really tight, right?

Just my opinion, mate. I think is the worst pickup I've tried not only among BKP, but in general. The lows aren't enough deep, they are plainly weird, the tone is too hairy and compressed and the high strings sound shrill, which make the solos the worst, as someone said.

Anyway, I agree it depends A LOT on the guitar. In mine which is too trebble-oriented I had to change them (after trying to love them with all my heart) for Warpigs and never looked back. Very happy now.

I'm afraid warpig would be a bit over the top. You have C or A pig?

I'm looking for something tight and clear. Abomb or black dog?
